Vartiovuori was discovered on September 13, 1936 and was discovered at the Iso-Heikkilä Observatory by Yrjö Väisälä.
It orbits a track with the outermost point being 2.4 AU and the nearest 3 AU.
The asteroid is 33 km in size and has an albedo of 0.15 and a spin time of 3.5 hours.
