Kemi was discovered on October 21, 1938 and discovered at the Iso-Heikkilä Observatory by Heikki Alikoski.
Kemi intersects the orbit of Mars - it orbits an orbit with an outermost point of 3.9 AU and a nearest 1.6 AU.
The asteroid is 15.8 to 18 km in size and has an albedo of 0.08 to 0.1 and a spin time of 9.2 hours and a brightness ranging from 0.25 to 0.55 magnitude.
