Visibility V / V
Based on weather forecasts and rain radar observations, a strong thunderstorm front approached Helsinki from the west-southwest. I went to the shore of Munkkiniemi to see the situation, but for a long time it seemed that the strongest thunder was passing by the west. In the end, a little lightning rain came to Helsinki in the aftermath.
For a long time, the clouds were quite featureless, and they would not have been guessed as strong thunderclouds if there had been no constant rumble from afar. At about 18:50, a cloud-like structure began to stand out at the bottom of the cloud. The cloud quickly began to look intimidatingly aggressive, but I was still left to shoot.
Around 19:05, the Rain Wall began to reach Keilaniemi and Otaniemi on the opposite shore. I immediately got in the car, but I didn't have time to drive a hundred meters when the gust of torrential flow also reached Munkkiniemi. The cloud had come on at a tremendous pace!
It started to rain so much horizontally that the visibility dropped to a few meters and branches and other debris flew in the air. I quietly circled under the canopy of a nearby gas station to wait for a safer drive. The sky flashed constantly and I saw a few handsome flashes of earth and clouds from the canopy.
After the wind and the worst rain eased, I drove home all the way to explore what was left on the camera card. The road flooded in many places and the asphalt had large branches as well as a couple of fallen traffic signs.
Attached is also a radar image from the radar page of Ursa's storm bongering section at 19:00. The background map is from the National Land Survey of Finland and radar data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute's open interface.

Kaunista ollut siellä. Turussa tuli huti :/
Joo, tutkakuvastakin näkyy miten Turkuun meni vain tasainen sadealue.
Ai jai jai! Kyllä on hienot vyöryt! Rehellisesti sanoen olisin toivonut tuolle iltapäivälehtien niin kovin hehkuttamalle rintamalle pohjoisempaa reittiä...
Tosin varmaan moni tavallinen kaduntallaaja on eri mieltä asiasta... ;-D
Juu, noin 100 km/h oli vauhtia tämän päivän myräkällä, joka uutisissa vahvistettiin.
Kerrassaan loistavat otokset! Itse osuin Espoossa tuohon sadeseinään, näkyvyys hetken ajan vain pari metriä (sic!) ja tuulipuuskat keinuttivat autoa!
Kiitos vaan! Olen itsekin ihan tyytyväinen kuviin. Vähän kotimatkalla jännitti, että pääseekö ehjänä perille!
Kaunis on vyörypilvi ja hienot kuvat!
Komea on ollut, hienot kuvat!
