On Wednesday evening, the cloud cover eased after the previous night's snowstorm. There was 20–30 centimeters of snow in some places in the forest. The northern lights immediately began to flicker, and were now mainly in the northern sky. The corona was formed again like on Monday. Cloudiness began to increase again, and the aurora borealis filled the entire sky with a smooth green carpet. Like Monday night, the telescope was left in the backpack.

I arrived at Enontekiö on Monday evening and when I got the things unloaded in the cabin, I watched the Northern Lights. The forecast looked good. I took the telescope with me on the trip, just in case I could photograph the north in the dark sky. I started walking to the beach, which had a good view to the south. On the beach, I immediately noticed that the northern lights were flickering in the direction of the south. Put the phone on a tripod and shoot. It was a wonderful experience to see the northern lights in the north. I called my son to come see the northern lights. For him, it was the...

The Deep Sky meeting at Tähtikallio in Artjärvi was atmospheric. Contrary to the forecasts, the weather was clear on Friday. The Milky Way was visible to the naked eye. Thanks to all the participants for the atmospheric meeting. We will meet again next year.

Comet 103P/Hartley (also known as Hartley 2) is a short-period comet with an orbit of 6.5 years. This orbit extends from the asteroid belt to the orbit of Venus! Hartley 2 flew by Earth for the last time in 2017. NASA's Deep Impact did a flyby in 2010 when it came within just 400 miles of Hartley 2. The flyby revealed a small, peanut-shaped comet with a diameter of about 1.5 km. Hartley 2 will make its closest pass on September 26, when it will be only 0.38 Earth-Sun distance. Closest to the sun on October 12.

This M101 galaxy supernova is still nicely visible with a slight dimming from my previous observation.

The atmosphere of Friday's arts night. The audience was praiseworthy in a constant stream. At first it looked hopelessly cloudy, but miraculously the sky cleared. We looked at the Andromeda galaxy M31, M27 and the pictured M13, the large globular cluster of Hercules. I was surprisingly able to see the objects in the middle of the light pollution. Attached are a couple of pictures of the conditions. I decided that the Riihimäki Astronomical Association will continue to participate in the Night of the Arts, because the audience was so large. The only downside was that I was running the show ...

Here is the observation of comet Nishimura from eVscope's science side from yesterday morning. I also took a couple of pictures with the eVscope before observing the scientific space.

A repeat of the previous morning, waking up at 02:30 in the program, first the transit of asteroid 2006 QK20, which I'm not sure what I was able to record, when in the middle of everything the device connections were completely lost. Otherwise, it was a pretty chilly morning and the humidity was 85%. Shortly before four, comet Nishimura came, and I got the first picture of it partly with the trees. The next attempt at four and the comet had risen just past the tree and the relief was great when even this one was successful, so there was no need to wake up early. A gif video compilation of ...

I looked at the clear sky in the evening and regretted that I couldn't film all night. In the morning there was an early wake-up call and a working day. I solved it by making a compromise and set the clock to ring at half past three in the morning. Now I had time to sleep for a few hours. The decision paid off, because I was able to photograph Comet Nishimura, which had changed considerably since my previous observation on August 20. The tail stood out in the next few seconds and what a wonderful greenish coma. I compiled a short gif animation from five pictures. I also filmed a scientific...

The weather report promised partly cloudy weather, and I thought I'd try my luck if I could get the 1212 Francette asteroid flyby photographed at 00:33. The roar of the Venetian rang out in my ears as I started tuning the telescope. The sky was clear in every direction, except for the southeast and south, where the big rafts of clouds were approaching. We could say goodbye to the description of the asteroid flyby. The swan's Deneb was conveniently still visible before the clouds, so the direction of the tube to the Swan and a short exposure of Deneb. Individual stars are rarely photogr...

Hideo Nishimura (74), a Japanese amateur astronomer, discovered a new comet on August 13. The comet is named Nishimura's comet after its discoverer. The new comet Nishimura is expected to brighten to about magnitude 3.7 around September 10. This means that it should be visible to the naked eye in the clear night sky, although it is still dark in Finland. The comet can be found near the twins in the early morning before sunrise. I haven't found any observations of comet Nishimura made in Finland in sky watchers yet I look forward to seeing how Nishimura's comet develops in the comin...

At the weekend, the weather favored stargazers, a calm, warm and moonless night. The Milky Way was easily distinguishable with the naked eye.
