All-sky aurora

24.9.2023 at 22.00 - 05.30 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (V)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The aurora borealis started as a weak evening glow in the northern sky, but at midnight the aurora borealis brightened so much that they were overexposed in the images of the Hankasalmi observatory's allsky camera. The best moments in the morning just before dawn. All night timelapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_9keeEvVKQ

Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The campaign to monitor the next outburst of the recurrent Nova (M31N 2008-12a) in the Andromeda Galaxy has started again. This nova erupts every year and the previous eruption was on December 2, 2023.

All-sky aurora

18.9.2023 at 21.01 - 05.00 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (IV)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Monday evening's great aurora borealis captured by Hankasalmi observatory's allsky camera. A bit of clouds hindered the observations. All night timelapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf7gop2lsYc

All-sky aurora

18.9.2023 at 21.00 - 00.00 - Muurame, Saarenkylä (IV)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

A three-hour shooting session from the photo studio. The aurora belt became visible immediately at dusk and remained near the mid-sky throughout the evening. Mostly fairly dim auroras, but with a few brighter phases. Green and momentarily red color visible to the naked eye. Intermittent clouds and fogging of the lenses were a hindrance.

A fireball at night, as bright as a full moon

15.9.2023 at 02.30 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (III)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

This bright fireball was visible in the Hankasalmi observatory's allsky camera image, whose 60s exposure started at 02:29:54 (23:29:54 UT).

Quiet aurora arc

Half-sky auroras

12.9.2023 at 21.00 - 23.30 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (IV)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The surprising aurora borealis was well visible in the Hankasalmi observatory's allsky camera images until the clouds covered the sky. The SAR arc at the very beginning? The black patch is still the greetings of the rascal; should go for a cleaning. All night time-lapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zns_HyNL8fg

Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

A short-lived, but spectacular, northern lights show in the wee hours of the morning. The "black hole" in the picture is not a celestial object, but the remnant of a star on the camera lens. All night timelapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEFverhltbk

Gamma-ray burst GRB 230826A

26.8.2023 at 23.30 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (I)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The first night of observation in autumn and immediately a gamma-ray burst alarm in the middle of the observations. In addition to the gamma-ray burst at 19:32:47 UT, Swift located a bright X-ray object whose coordinates are RA(J2000) = 5h 32d 14.2s, Dec(J2000) = 66h 07d 30.2s, 10.0 arcsecond precision. So comfortably in the area of our Finns in the northern sky. So let's shoot! I took a total of 25 minutes of exposure. There was no afterglow in the first images, nor in the final stack of 25 images. The brightness of the afterglow is therefore dimmer than the limiting magnitude of the imag...

A fireball at night, as bright as a crescent moon

21.8.2023 at 02.29 - Hankasalmi, Murtoinen (III)
Arto Oksanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Fireball in Hankasalmi observatory's allsky camera image, whose 60s exposure has started at 02:29:23 (23:29:23 UTC). Apparently, only the rest of the flight is shown. There were a few other observations about this, so I was able to check the pictures.
