Half-sky auroras

23.4.2023 at 22.30 - 23.34 - Kerava (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

G4 solar storm, but the northern lights were surprisingly dim and awkward. In my photographs, I usually aim to bring out the northern lights as my eyes saw them. This time I will make an exception and by adjusting the contrast and color saturation, I have brought out the shapes and colors of the northern lights as seen by a camera that is much more accurate than the eye. The camera is more "right" than the eye, which is pretty bad in terms of color separation and resolution.

All-sky aurora

9.1.2022 at 00.26 - 00.28 - Ylläsjärvi (IV)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

The picture was taken three minutes after the northern lights corona from the zenith south of our yard with slippers on our feet. There are a confusing amount of elements in the picture. At the top is Starship Aurora, which progresses to the right. There is a forward-facing gravity antenna under the bow. Beneath the ship is a beam to transfer people or goods to or from the ship, similar to the well-known Starship Enterprise. There is an old-fashioned chimney in the stern of the ship. The stern of the vessel has a green antimatter engine shield at the top and a white at the bottom.

20.11.2021 at 23.11 - Kolari, Ylläsjärvi (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Pictures were taken of the corona in the zenith during 23 seconds. This was preceded by the activation of the western end of the arc, where after a magnificent fire dance lasting 2 minutes, the fire rose to zenith, where Korona then lasted a minute. I had already packed my stuff and had just left to walk home from the scene when the situation surprised me. I suddenly took out the camera and didn’t have time to put it on a tripod that was already packed. So the pictures are taken with the arm, the arms outstretched towards the sky and the head as far back as it just bends. Her hands trembled wi...

One halo form

7.9.2021 at 11.55 - 12.05 - Helsinki (I)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

A handsome halo by the open sea in front of Helsinki appeared in front of me as I was boating south.

Fogbow

28.5.2021 at 09.17 - 09.28 - Porvoo
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Handsome fog arch after dense fog. The visibility was a couple of hundred meters before this fog arc, and 47 km soon after the fog arc.

Active aurora band

30.3.2021 at 22.58 - 23.04 - Kolari, Ylläsjärvi (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

The images on the left show a red-purple arc or radius straight up from the western horizon. At first it was only visible on the camera but when I looked away. so I saw it dimly even with the naked eye. Some people estimate that there could be a SAR. But it may not, however, because it is to some extent related to the main formation of the northern lights and is not very uniform in shape. There was a lot of red and lilac in the sky above the greenish Northern Lights, up to about 50 degrees in the northwest sky.

All-sky aurora

21.3.2021 at 22.22 - 22.23 - Kolari, Ylläsjärvi (V)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

First, there were 1-2 arcs in the sky in the north for an hour that rose a little quietly upward. At the same time, half of the sky was in the northern lights and a thick belt passed from the eastern horizon through the zenith to the western horizon. The belt became stronger and brighter. At 22:21 the eastern end of the belt began to come to life and brightened in half a minute. The animation rose to zenith where the stunning Korona show began at 10:22 p.m., which lasted a minute. These pictures were taken in 47 seconds. The handsome Korona I've ever seen! After these images, Korona spread...

Half-sky auroras

1.3.2021 at 21.40 - 21.50 - Kolari, Kolarinsaari (IV)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Repolainen's guy, a heavenly bear, left his paw mark on Kolarisaari.

All-sky aurora

8.2.2021 at 22.50 - 23.59 - Ylläsjärvi (V)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

The most beautiful northern lights of winter! The first picture shows a rare uniform sawtooth. Shutter speed only 0.5 to 0.8 seconds due to the high brightness of the lights. It was dumbfounding to be watching this awesome heavenly play in the dark Jänkhä. Satellite data predicts the ignition time of fires with an accuracy of 15 minutes one and a half hours in advance. Northern lights have been visible in Ylläsjärvi for six of the last eight nights. Five times there have been big fires and once there have been small ones.

Active aurora band

3.2.2021 at 23.49 - 23.59 - Kolari, Ylläsjärvi (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

In many ways exceptional northern lights. The fires came suddenly, as if from scratch, and grew to their full size in about a minute. Width over 120 degrees and located mainly at an altitude of 15-30 degrees. The whole system moved and danced quickly, like a herd of clouds blown by a storm wind. Colors and great brightness, even with a short shutter speed, the image burned from something burst. The fires faded as fast as they came. There were at least two of these approximately 6–10-minute screenings on 3-4.2 nights and at least one on 2–3.2 nights. Bz, Boyle, and the dynamic pressure gave a g...

Active aurora band

24.10.2020 at 21.10 - 21.15 - Ylläsjärvi (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Large, bright and multi-colored northern lights. There is a record amount of pink. The eye saw the same as the camera. "Normal" Northern Lights, a pale light green shore, can be seen below the pink. A few other northern lights in different places in northern Finland also photographed this fire and consider its pink intensity unseen before. Anyway, in October 2020, there have been more multicolored northern lights than usual, especially pink and other shades of red. Why is this? The white cloud at the bottom left is the snow coming from the snow thrower.

Half-sky auroras

19.10.2020 at 21.20 - 22.30 - Kilpisjärvi (IV)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

First image: Rare dark red, downright blood red, you come to the left, so the dark ones don't stand out against the night sky. On the right side at the same time so bright you come that the image burns a little punctured. At the top of the sky was the Corona, where the "lines" of this fire also point. This month, there have been more multicolored northern lights in Lapland than usual, especially pink. Northern lights have been seen on clear nights at least every other night. Second image: Huge northern lights rise behind the mountain range, do not fit into the image of a wide-angle lens. T...

Aurora rays

31.8.2020 at 01.35 - 01.40 - Kolari, Ylläsjärvi (II)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

What is this supposed to be? The color is at least completely exceptional. There were no other or "ordinary" northern lights that night. Visible so as with the naked eye was the darkest moment of the night.

Eye-catching night shining clouds

22.7.2020 at 00.15 - 00.30 - Helsinki, Lauttasaari (V)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Thrill-looking belt tree night clouds. There were also "ordinary" night clouds in the sky in the same direction northwest next to and behind them.

Milky way

31.8.2019 at 23.20 - 23.50 - Raasepori (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

The Milky Way was magnificently visible ascending from the southern horizon. Good location on a high cliff on an island away from stray lights. A warm and calm night, a nice feeling to describe the sky and admire the night's naturalist phenomena.

Half-sky auroras

28.2.2019 at 20.40 - 21.00 - Ylläsjärvi, Junkanjänkkä (IV)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Large and very bright northern lights. Comes in many colors, including dark green.

Total lunar eclipse

21.1.2019 at 07.24 - Ylläsjärvi (IV)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Location: Junkanjänkkä. First it was bright when there was moonlight, then it became pretty dark when the moon was covered. Then in the middle of the darkest moment, the track lights came on and it felt like now nothing was going to be shooting in this place. But then I look for a new place to shoot, where the trail lights fluttering backwards became a good part of the landscape.

One halo form

19.1.2019 at 23.20 - 00.20 - Kolari (I)
Yrjö Benson, Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

A larger and thicker halo than usual. So big that the diameter of the halo was 2/3 of the field of view of the 11mm wide-angle lens (Tokina 11-20mm) of the body-cage camera (Canon 550D). In the southeast corner of the halo, the halo appears to continue as far as the image area is sufficient. At 0:20 clouds began to appear that were clearly visible inside the halo. The picture was taken at 11:39 p.m.

Active aurora band

23.3.2018 at 22.14 - 22.24 - Kolari (III)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

Rarely do you get northern lights, moon, clouds and stars in the same picture. Behind a thin cloud curtain, the moon illuminates the clouds shaped by the wind. The Northern Lights are so powerful and the moon is just right behind the gauze so that the moon is not too bright and does not spoil the visibility of the Northern Lights. Even a few stars appear and the moonlit one acquires the image at the bottom. There are no lights or diffused lights in this place, which is a great place to photograph northern lights. The Northern Lights are in the shape of a tension, like a whirlwind, and the shap...

All-sky aurora

16.3.2018 at 00.40 - 01.20 - Kolari (V)
Yrjö Benson, Ursa (Helsinki)

A handsome night of fire, a feast of shapes and colors. Bright northern lights. Moderate image processing: In addition to straightening and cropping, only fine-tuning the amount of exposure and detail, with the goal of making the image fit as well as possible at night.
