Binocular comet ZTF

27.1.2023 at 01.17 - 01.21 - Siikalatva (I)
Jarmo Kalaoja, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

The comet was visible in the binoculars today for some reason even a little weaker than at the beginning of the week. In the freezing weather, this time I tried shooting with the camera's burst shooting until the telescope was completely fogged up... The results were a preliminary experiment with Deep sky stacker stacking and a small improvement of the brightness after that, not very good processing programs installed on the computer yet. I tried a hundred tails, it's hard to tell if the hemispherical veil shown in the picture is real or the result of image manipulation.

Binocular comet ZTF

Galaksi kuvassa NGC 5907 (mag...

The maximum of the eclipse overcast

10.6.2021 at 10.00 - 16.00 - Siikalatva
Jarmo Kalaoja, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

Weather cloudy appropriately at dusk. However, the screw tag sensor that measured the temperature outside in the shade seems to have noticed some special cooling anomalies during the blackout. Edit: It can also be a local weather event, of course, but then it describes the luck of the observer.

Primary rainbow

8.9.2019 at 20.07 - 20.10 - Siikalatva (IV)
Jarmo Kalaoja, Oulun Arktos

After the sun had already set (according to the FMI weather application on 20.03), its rays fell into a cloud that had just rained, forming half of a reddish rainbow reaching high.

Surprisingly, the clouds faded at night and of course the telescopes were not on their way. I then tried taking widescreen images with a cheap clock mechanism pimped (Bresser) Lidl Skylux tripod and handling with an iPad. A bit of a special looking horizon and trees as a result.

#bongaalinnunrata description practice. filming had to stop as the fog increased. Preliminarily treated with iPad. A darker place, but the scattered light of nearby centers.

While practicing widescreen shooting on the Milky Way, a rather bright starburst captured the image.

Total solar eclipse

21.8.2017 at 14.38 - 14.40 - Greenville, Etelä-Carolina, Yhdysvallat (V)
Jarmo Kalaoja

We watched the eclipse in the supermarket yard in a convertible. A few other observers on site. Blackout glasses had been purchased in advance, but they were distributed e.g. at a local beer bar. I had decided to leave the filming to others. The predicted partly cloudy disappeared completely during the partial phase and the sky was cloudless. In the darkened Sun, redness of protuberances was noticeable to the naked eye, mostly at the top right. Venus was already visible in the final bubble of the partial phase. The sky is not completely dark, e.g., Regulus was not visible. Even the HDR images ...

Active aurora band

2.4.2016 at 22.30 - Siikalatva (III)

After ten, I started watching and photographing Jupiter when a bright northern lights belt appeared almost on my head. It remained pretty much the same for a long time, slowly fading. Jupiter was remarkably magnificent, the images would need post-processing and do not do justice to the view. Too bad I apparently missed the fireball I saw a little earlier.

Total lunar eclipse

28.9.2015 at 04.30 - 06.55 - Siikalatva (IV)
Jarmo Kalaoja, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

I woke up by chance and the light of the moon came out the window through the clouds. The sky became completely cloudless, suitably at the beginning of the eclipse, although the forecast promised another and, despite a sore throat, always had to watch it in between. Perhaps the most spectacular lunar eclipses I’ve seen, the dawn of the morning and the proximity of the horizon, I guess. At the perfect stage, the Moon was darker than usual for me In the last picture, the Moon is already on the horizon and looks just like the usual crescent.

Diffuse glow

13.9.2013 at 23.30 - Siikalatva (I)
Jarmo Kalaoja

Dim northern lights in the northern sky on the shores of a forest pond just before midnight. The slowly increasing Cloudiness covered them soon after.

A fireball at night, brigter than the venus

13.9.2013 at 23.23 - Siikalatva (III)
Jarmo Kalaoja

A very slow and colorful fireball rose from the horizon. I was just starting to shoot the faint northern lights visible from behind the clouds and the focus had still sadly gotten too close. Edit, the camera clock seemed to be wrong, so I corrected the observation time.

Sivusateenkaari

28.7.2013 at 04.06 - Oulu (III)
Jarmo Kalaoja

When returning from QStock, a reddish rainbow was visible at about 4 a.m. and shortly thereafter against the remnants of thunderclouds that had turned into drizzle. At first the arc was almost perfect, but later dimmed at its highest point, disappearing soon after this picture was taken.

One halo form

11.5.2013 at 18.40 - Siikalatva (I)
Jarmo Kalaoja

The colorful halo (apparently the arch of the zenith environment) appeared for a moment just before the arrival of the thunder front.

Quiet village road, in the north you can see e.g. the comet Panstarrs, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Arc de Triomphe and the Milky Way.

A fireball at night, brigter than the venus

29.3.2013 at 23.58 - Siikalatva (III)
Jarmo Kalaoja

While trying out the time-lapse shooting, an image of a fireball in the northwest skyline happened. Northern lights flashed north about an hour later. Personally, I didn't see that but on the computer screen.
