Binocular comet ZTF

27.1.2023 at 20.30 - Järvenpää (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

On the outskirts of Järvenpää, there was so much man-made light in the sky that you couldn't get a very brilliant shot of the brightest comet in the sky with camera optics. Mostly the coma came up.

Pearl clouds

27.1.2023 at 08.50 - Järvenpää (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The previous evening, the usual clouds were in the way, but at dawn pearly clouds were almost the only clouds in the sky. The brightness in the direction of the Sun forced me to use very short exposures this time.

(2212) Hephaistos

21.1.2023 at 03.49 - 04.10 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Porin Karhunvartijat

(2212) Hephaistos (1978 SB) The Apollo/NEO asteroid was imaged on the first evening of the 2023 January talcos. The asteroid of the Hephaistos group was discovered by the Soviet Ukrainian astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh at the Crimean Nauchi (095 – Crimea-Nauchnij) observatory on September 27, 1978. The target has been found as a 12.5mag target. The asteroid got its name from Hephaistos, the blacksmith god of Greek mythology. Hephaestus forged all the weapons of the Olympos gods, he was also banished from Mount Olympos because of his lameness. Source Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/...

NGC 4477, 4473, 4479

21.1.2023 at 03.23 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

A few galaxies caught the picture from the middle stages of the Markarian chain. The elliptical galaxy NGC 4473 and the bar-lens galaxies NGC 4477 are most clearly visible in the image. The smaller bar-lens galaxy NGC 4479 also stands out.

NGC 6503

21.1.2023 at 02.09 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The diagonally visible spiral galaxy, which was previously photographed in black and white on Tähtikallio, now ended up being the subject of a color image.

C/2022 E3 (ZTF) The comet was imaged on the first evening of the 2023 January talcos. A comet on a hyperbolic orbit was discovered by the Palomar Mountain ZTF variable object search program (I41 Palomar Mountain ZTF) on 2022 March 2. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is a wide-field search program for supernovae and other rapidly changing objects, based on the Samuel Oschin telescope, a 48" Schmidt telescope and a wide-field camera. The comet will enter perihelion on January 12, 2023. 1.11au from the sun. When photographing the comet, it was 0.48464au away in the Bear Guard, closest to it. i...

NGC 7510

2.12.2022 at 21.50 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Christos Oscar Kambiselis, Kari Laihia, Hannu Määttänen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This group of stars is not very brilliant, but it stands out well due to the low number of stars in the background. It was the last DS destination photographed during Tähtikallio's little Christmas weekend, because Cloudiness took over the sky.

NGC 7790, NGC 7788

2.12.2022 at 20.22 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Christos Oscar Kambiselis, Kari Laihia, Hannu Määttänen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Photographing nebulae and galaxies on the opening night of Tähtikallio's little Christmas weekend would not have made sense due to the moon phase. The weather forecast still looked quite bad in the morning, but the tearing of the cloud cover gave the cell the opportunity to capture two fine and dense open star clusters.

NGC 6939

2.12.2022 at 20.10 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Christos Oscar Kambiselis, Kari Laihia, Hannu Määttänen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

A fairly wide and evenly-bright open star group came into the picture this time. The cloud cover that was over the moon seems to reduce the reflections caused by the moon a little when filming.

NGC 6015

19.11.2022 at 03.27 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This galaxy turned out to be surprisingly dim when photographed. There were quite a few problems with the background sky.

NGC 6951

19.11.2022 at 02.59 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Photographing this spiral galaxy was surprisingly difficult. One would not have thought that the Moon, which was low in a small phase, would cause gradients, but maybe the loose Cloudiness caused them.

NGC 4236

19.11.2022 at 01.24 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This rod spiral galaxy does not celebrate with its surface brightness. It would be good to get more exposure, even if the essence of the subject came out reasonably well.

Telescopic comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 1

19.11.2022 at 00.53 - 01.14 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (II)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Veikko Mäkelä, Porin Karhunvartijat

29P/ (Schwassmann-Wachmann 1) A periodic Jupiter family comet was imaged on the first night of the 2022 November talcos. Eruptions sometimes happen in the comet, that's why we have tried to photograph several times. The comet's orbit is outside the orbit of Jupiter and comes close to Jupiter 2037 to less than 1au. Eruptions may increase the brightness by 1-5 mag. The size of the large comet nucleus is 60.4 km. When photographing, the comet was 5.3204au away, at its closest 5.078au on December 29, 2022. The comet is now in its normal state. I measured the brightness T15.4mag with the As...

NGC 1023

18.11.2022 at 23.50 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Toni Veikkolainen, Juha Blad, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The purpose was to photograph in color the easily distinguishable rod lens gala that was photographed in black and white less than a year earlier , and we can be satisfied with the end result. Even the slightly irregular shape of the object stood out nicely.

(7763) Crabeels

(7763) Crabeels (1990 UT5,1994 RE1) A mid-main belt asteroid imaged on the first night of the 2022 November talcos. When we photographed comet C/2021 Y1 (ATLAS), this was included in the pictures. The asteroid was discovered by Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the ESO La Silla Observatory (809 European Southern Observatory, La Silla) on 16 October 1990. Elst has found a total of 3868 asteroids and comet/asteroid 7968 Elst-Pizarro. Source Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Walter_Elst . The asteroid got its name from the Dutch, Antwerp organist Henri Crabeels (b. 1904). The size...
