All-sky aurora

17.3.2015 at 19.50 - 02.30 - Järvenpää (V)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

I was going to a meeting of the Geophysical Society during the day when my northern lights received a northern lights warning. At that point, it was reasonable for me to hope that the meeting would not go on for too long, as the sky might strike fire at dusk. I was able to leave the center of Helsinki in the evening in seven countries, and immediately after arriving in Järvenpää, I noticed a dim fog in the twilight sky, which, due to its appearance, could not be called clouds even with the best of intentions. In my distress, I grabbed a picture of the zenith environment, and there was the quit...

7.10.2015 at 20.00 - 00.00 - Järvenpää (V)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

During my work, I had impatiently followed the northern lights and died after a light show that would be comparable to what I saw on March 17, 2015. When the weather forecasts still seemed good and the Tähtikallio camera already showed half the sky green in the early stages of the dusk, I didn't make any time but went to the nearby field with the shooting verms. I already saw from the backyard in the eighth country that there was something stupid in the sky other than clouds, and there were many. I chatted with Jesse Nyyssönen on Facebook and he also came to the same place of observation i...

Toni Veikkolainen, Oulun Arktos

Drove in Lapland on the Muonio-Levi-Rovaniemi axis. The northern lights started there at 10 pm and were sometimes already great at the time. However, the sky sometimes broke at 02 times when we were in Rovaniemi. The fires were very mobile and active. With a full-cell camera and 14mm glass, I really got to think about what point in the sky you want to capture when it happened everywhere. sony a7s, Samyang 14mm f2.8

In late September, I filmed an incredible northern lights show on video. The settings could have been better, but then I was, to put it mildly, out of my mind when I looked at those repos

All-sky aurora

8.2.2021 at 22.30 - 00.00 - Salla (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

I moved to Salla exactly a week ago. A small municipality that is excellent for star hobbies, where the street lights in the city center are turned off at 22:30 and there is no need to look for dark skies. Now the last few days have seen a lot of northern lights in other municipalities in Lapland, but eastern Lapland has been left out of the invitations due to clouds. Today, however, succeeded. It was over -28 from the frost and it felt. The batteries died one after another and my fingers were so icy that I barely got to press the camera button.

Fri-Sat night was the biggest northern lights show this spring. There seemed to be no cloudless sky except in northern and eastern Lapland and in the northeastern part of the country. The show started right away sometime at 7pm when it started to get dark. I personally live and shoot from the church village of Salla and here when the street lights go out only at 22:00 so I got to pray that no bigger performances will take place before that time. On top of all that, the crescent was pretty high. Well, yes, those big northern lights came early, but it didn't bother me because they lasted for...

24.3.2021 at 22.00 - 03.00 - Salla (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

In the early evening, the forecasts for the northern lights were pretty weak, but then the gauges made a full turn and knew how to predict something for 23 countries. Well, though, I couldn’t wait for such a big screen. Here were the biggest seasons of the whole season 20-21 at least what I actually saw. The season is coming to an end when the nights start to get so bright. So probably now exposed to the corona. From its formation, I have a nice whole series of pictures taken from the beginning to the main point. In the south-west direction there were big and bright green lights but in the nor...

16.4.2021 at 23.30 - 03.00 - Salla (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

The northern lights of the evening in front of Sallatunturi. 10km was allowed to pedal in one direction, so it was an evening run. The nights start to be already light, but two or three hours dark enough to see these. Rarely variegated were and in the midst of all the best performance came against the worst horror scenario of all; memory card full. In that panic, cursing, I suddenly removed some old bullshit from the camera. When we returned to the backyard, it had pretty bright big arches high up. I couldn't get terribly excited about them even though it was a great pearl necklace. The sk...

27.8.2021 at 22.30 - 02.00 - Salla (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

Yesterday I saw the first northern lights of the season, which were quite dim, partly because the sky is still very light and I told myself that the week is waiting for the sky to darken and then look new. Today, however, I watched the northern lights curves and the time at the pin was. As usual, I pedaled by bicycle to Salla Ruuhijärvi sometime after 10 pm and already in the middle I noticed a huge northern lights above the head. I stopped on the road, conveniently under the street lamps, and took a couple of pictures with the camera by hand. The stars did suffer because I didn’t bother bothe...

You will reach the full sky in about six hours. There were bright, sharp-shaped fires in the early evening, but after that they were blurry and hazy. The first ones I photographed from the yard followed by a pedal bike to Ruuhijärvi. There were problems with moisture as the heating bank power bank remained at home. So the lens misted. So back to the backyard. Sometime around 03, the northern lights started to be really dark blue. Few have seen it that day bluish.

There were great northern lights last night. It is a pity that they could be watched mainly from the Sodankylä sky camera, as Salla and Posio seem to be the only Cloudy places in Lapland. Here, however, it was somehow visible at some point through the fool. At 2 o'clock at a time when many hours of giant fires were running out like a wall then the sky was perfectly clear.

2.1.2022 at 23.30 - 00.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

The clouds were forecast all night, so I watched the situation in the sky quite lazily, even though I knew there was life in the northern lights curves. An evening went by at Netflix, and at some point, however, I glanced at the Sodankylä sky camera, and there was a clear spaghetti monster in the sky. At that point, there was a rush. Pictures from my own yard, the lights would go out if I ran 200m further north, but in that situation I didn't dare to go anywhere but I focused on shooting in a bit of bad conditions.

It was an evening. By 18 o'clock I was already starting to worry, as the predicted clear night looked a little desperate as the sky was in a cloud and I was pessimistic. At that time, there would have been little northern lights in the sky that I didn’t see. Fortunately, the sky became clearer when quite large northern lights entered the stage. I chose a highway that was only a couple of hundred feet north of my apartment. There I photographed for the first two hours when I later found a good spot on the banks of the Kitisenjoki. There were a lot of big fires even before midnight, includin...

During the day I bongailed the pearl clouds and as soon as I got home I looked at the northern lights curves and looked promising. It wasn't even very dark, so dim red light appeared in the Sodankylä sky camera. The intention was to go in search of a better place to spend the day, because I still didn't know where to have a good relationship. light-free and open place close to home. But there were signs of a big show in the sky, so I went to the same lousy but familiar forest next to the light pollution. At some point, very nice big reddish lights were visible there. The man met the do...

A few northern lights have already been seen this year, but I have never seen such red ones. I was leaving for the sauna early in the evening until I watched the northern lights curves that had made a complete turn abruptly. Isoa was promised and I went to fill the forest again. I stood for a couple of quarters, the eye didn’t see anything at that point but the camera noticed huge and reddish arches high in the sky. There was no green guy. I thought something big was coming and it didn’t take long for the sky to fall on my neck. At some point, the fires went south for the holidays when the onl...

12.2.2022 at 20.00 - 02.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Toni Veikkolainen

Pink was the theme of tonight. It was abundant in the sky, at least in the early evening. At the time, I spent a couple of hours in the middle of the swamp in the fresh -30 degree weather. I refined, but I didn't manage to stay any longer and I left home when the big shows ran out at that time. Last night when it went a little unnecessarily long with the northern lights (6h). Well, however, I regretted this decision quite a lot later, as the sky came time pouring down my neck and lasted for hours. All this time I found out that it is pointless to go there again after 20 minutes and there i...

There was a lot of life in the northern lights curves during the day and the going on for hours. As soon as the sky dimmed even a little, big lights were visible above the head against the dimly lit sky. These fires then fled for a long time to the southern sky. Occasionally they always came overhead, but in the northern sky they just didn’t feel comfortable. At some point they went so south that there was no more northern lights in the sky. At its best, Bz was -24nT and stayed there for probably half an hour. The k-value of Kiruna was 8 sometimes at 02 times.

I went to the fells in the afternoon to see the fallow and ended up grilling on the porch of Saanajärvi. It was forecast to be clear for the evening, so I sat there for several hours waiting for darkness. In practice, as soon as the sky darkened a little, you could see bright arcs in every direction. Sometimes after midnight there were many different colors and for a moment the bright northern lights covered almost 100% of the surface of the sky. At two in the morning I went home to walk in the dark and during the whole 5km journey there were some skylights here and there.

Halo phenomena covering the sky

14.5.2014 at 13.00 - Järvenpää (V)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

I woke up on a cloudy morning and bonged from the sky to begin with a very powerful 22 degree tire and the arches above and below the sides joining together. The side suns and a piece of the horizon ring were also visible. I grabbed a few pictures, but I couldn’t guess at all what was to come. It wasn’t until the afternoon sky that the best I could imagine exploded (Figures 2, 3, and 4). The side suns were beautiful and distinctive, in the 22-degree top-side arc the colors of the spectrum shone handsomely, and the pool-side arc was downright dazzling. The dim rainbow-like halos rising from the...

Total solar eclipse

14.11.2012 at 06.38 - Mulligan Highway, Queensland, Australia (V)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

I was part of the Finnish eclipse observation team that arrived in the northeast of Australia. The weather forecasts from the previous night showed heavy clouds and even rain on the coast. However, there was no reason to panic, as the bus service left at 2:20 inland. Near the village of Mount Carbine, there was still time to admire the beauty of the southern starry sky. We are looking for a suitable eclipse observation site even after the partial phase has begun. Eventually, we ended up in dry terrain dotted with eucalyptus trees near Maitland Downs Airport. The view to the east was mountainou...
