Kirkkaat helmiäispilvet näkyivät tänä aamuna Sodankylässä. Jo klo 07:30 aikaan pilvet näkyi koilisessa, toki todella himmeänä, vaatii pitkää valoitusaikaa. Noin tunti myöhemmin, pilvet olivat todella kirkkaita koko kaakostaivaalla.

The PSC season, or the pearl cloud season, has begun. It is rare to see Polar Stratospheric Clouds as early as November. This morning in Sodankylä, the sky was finally cloudless and the pearl clouds were nicely visible. Pearl clouds contribute to ozone depletion in the spring. Addition: there were no type II pearl clouds glowing in the colors of the spectrum, at least I didn’t see. The stratosphere is exceptionally cold at the moment, around -87 ° C. Probably when the sun goes down it shows up again.

It was an exceptionally bright night, so I wanted to try filming the Milky Way. However, northern lights also appeared in the picture. The weather was calm, so the water of the Kitinen River was like a mirror. The northern lights were as bright as the Milky Way, i.e. very dim. The green light was visible to the naked eye, but the red oxygen emission above 150km was only visible in the photo. Canon EOS 6D, Samyang 12mm f / 2.8, ISO 4000, 15s

The first observations of northern lights in Sodankylä after the summer, although the sun was only about 8 ° 40 'below the horizon. That is, the northern lights were very bright that were already visible.

2018-08-08, 2128-2205 UTC, illuminated night clouds were visible in Sodankylä. Sure very weak, because the sun was then only 6 ° 0'-6 ° 30 'below the horizon.
