Moon

22.1.2023 at 18.20 - 18.30 - Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe (IV)
Janne Särkelä

Probably the youngest moon I've seen (about 21 hours). I was filming a timelapse of the Earth's shadow and I ended up turning my phone in the other direction. At first I could only see Venus, until the young moon came into view after the sky darkened a little more. To the right of Venus is faintly Saturn. Coincidentally, the shooting moment was the closest encounter between Venus and Saturn, I later learned.

Rare halos

8.6.2022 at 17.30 - 20.00 - Port Leucate, Ranska (IV)
Janne Särkelä

With a short stop on the European car journey, I have now often looked out the window because of the stunning scenery, and something familiar can be seen in the sky. Or I haven't seen such halos before. There were two nested rings around the sun, and below the sun was a more shimmering part of the sky nearby. It is best seen in the main image. The weather is quite warm at ground level, but there is a strong wind coming from the mainland. As I write this observation report after a couple of hours, I notice that, to my understanding, the same phenomenon still continues, as the couple describ...

Cloudbow visible from the ground

13.1.2022 at 13.10 - 13.25 - Karkkila (III)

An ordinary rainbow is probably in question. It was a bit of a surprise this time of year, and the rainfall seemed to be really moving in that direction.

Arcus cloud

20.7.2018 at 18.00 - 18.30 - Turenki (IV)
Janne Särkelä

A avalanche cloud accompanied by a rumble at the end of the cloud front. No ground lightning was observed at all. Lots of rumble but only a couple of visible clouds.

Active aurora band

24.8.2016 at 00.33 - Helsinki (III)
Janne Särkelä

Observations from the light-polluted downtown area. The brightness and activity of the substorm came as a positive surprise, and I got the images with the iPhone 5S camera - that is, the brightness must have been quite significant. With the naked eye a very satisfying start with this autumn in the ears! This usually shows those bottom edges only. In addition to the green, a little purple was visible, and a swirlingly stormy arc scattered along the sky. I have worked at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory for a year, from which this passion for northern lights has remained in the spinal cord ...

Rare halos

18.7.2012 at 11.00 - Helsinki (IV)
Janne Särkelä

The sky was in a strange fog, and the halo was visible above the clouds. On the other side of the sky, a light milky arch and brightness was visible from the halo. The arc section was geometrically connected to the horizontal arc in the figure.
