The new year started with a moonshot here in Espoo. So here's a quick shooting exercise with the current so-called with grab & go equipment. It is a one-time portable shooting set that enables quick shooting when there is no time or opportunity to tune larger sets or a "permanent station". I marked a couple of crater sizes in one picture, just because they can easily see where the resolution of a tube of that size is approximately sufficient, photographed through an IR-bandpass filter in average weather in Finland, photographed through the heat flows of a populated area. So here is about 7...

This will be the last solar photo of this season, because the sun doesn't climb very high anymore and the weather is also getting worse and colder. I tried to make a mosaic of the whole disc from the videos and although it didn't turn out perfect, the result is really nice. The full-size disk has a size of around 5000 x 5000 pixels, so you should check out the full-size collages and shooting information at the AstroBin links below: https://www.astrobin.com/wjm5lh/?nc=collection&nce=10862 https://www.astrobin.com/yeaffl/?nc=collection&nce=10862

Perseids

12.8.2022 at 23.03 - 01.56 - Porvoo (III)
Tommi Ropponen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The bread type of the summer, i.e. sun photography, has suffered from weather problems and there have been no pictures due to the clouds. Even though there was a full moon at the time of the Perseids, I decided that the best thing to do was just make coffee and go when the weather was good. The forecasts showed cloudiness in the interior (I had thought of going from Espoo to Askola like last years or to Tähtikallio), so the plan had to be changed quickly. So the destination is Emäsalo in Porvoo. At the observation site in the outdoor recreation area, the parking lots were full and there was a ...

Filming in the throes of the flu led to me capturing the data for a mosaic instead of basking in the sun longer for animation. A few thumbnails here and then a full-size mosaic combo with different treatments can be found on Astrobin: https://www.astrobin.com/298ful/ The size of that is a good 11000 x 5000 pixels, so it's worth viewing it on a slightly larger screen.

Today, the memory puts the settings in a better pattern than yesterday. So here are the 43-minute animations shot in 50 screens. Also, as still images, a few pictures of the active area at the edge of the sun, which I also shot yesterday. Link to the full-size animation here: https://astrob.in/epaun3/0/ (may take some time to load because I combined all the different processing into the animation at once). Sunbathing on the wavelength of hydrogen alpha this morning. There was a thin cloud in the sky, which meant that the shutter speed had to be slightly increased compared to normal. However, Seeing was nice and calm in the morning, so the final pictures and animations turned out pretty good. The intention was to take videos for about an hour to stack the animations, so I would record 20 seconds of data and then take a break of about 30 seconds & repeat this sequence in between, refining as needed. However, I sighed a bit in a hurry and only finally realized that I was capturing the video for 45 ...

In the midst of the clouds, the sun described this afternoon at the wavelength of hydrogen-alpha. The animation was stuck for 10 minutes when the clouds refused to cooperate. A quick shot of the sun at a wavelength of hydrogen-alpha after work. As expected, seeing in the afternoon was worse than it would have been in the morning, but there is work to be done :) Full sizes can be found at AstroBin: https://www.astrobin.com/lp6c4s/?nc=collection&nce=10862

For the second day in a row, most of the lunch break was sacrificed for filming. The weather was the same as yesterday, just fine, but there was something thin in the sky because the shutter speed had to be increased by 0.7 ms longer than yesterday. The images are mosaics, the leftmost of which is mirrored. Because the images are really fair in size (3600 x 4300 pixels) and because the Sky Guard is reducing these, full resolution images with explanations can be found here: https://www.astrobin.com/82ffjo/ https://www.astrobin.com/287ht0/

Lunch break snapshots of the sun. The weather was just fine and if there had been time to shoot the animation material, the result would certainly have been spectacular. Of course, this is better than nothing :) More pictures and more detailed description details: https://www.astrobin.com/4855ir/

I wish these could be titled even with the model "Life of the Sun for 48 Minutes". So the material is a few videos showing what is happening in the chromosphere of the Sun at the wavelength of hydrogen alpha. A few smaller and one slightly larger eruption grabbed the cell during that 48 minutes. The four videos are all from the same material, but with slightly different treatments or coloring - some see things better than others. And finish with a bunch of still images from the biggest eruption phase. Full-size videos and pictures can be found on AstroBin (links below). The animations are fair...

Sunny in windy weather and almost creepy seeing on display. However, modern equipment and software work wonders when more than 7,650 squares are recovered and the top 400 are stacked.

A quick description of the Sunday morning carriage. The weather was raw, cold and probably close to zero with the wind chill. Even the wind tore the equipment so that I was afraid the pipe would fall on the asphalt yard - next time I'll watch that little wind before I carry the stuff in the yard. The images and animations turned out to be quite good, although the sky wasn't entirely clear (this was mainly due to the fact that the shutter speed had to be increased by about 1 ms compared to the "proper" weather) and the wind waved the tube so that the subjects didn't move out of the ...

I went on a coffee break to scrape the test material out of the yard. The aim of the description was to test what 12bit vs 8bit data looks like in the current case. As a result, here are a few final pictures. The wind was creepily strong for this grab & go system, but with transparency, the end result is pretty great. I wonder if this summer 2022 filming season is off to a good start. More information about the equipment can be spy on astrobin: https://www.astrobin.com/19krty/ Addition: Two more animations completed. In these, the sun has been photographed during the same shooting for 18 minut...

Tommi Ropponen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

This morning I sneaked over the filling hill of Malminkartano with the intention of trying once again to get the sunrise photographed. I started all the way down the hill, but I walked about halfway down the slope before I started shooting - the idea was to make the urban environment more visible in the picture. The increase in clouds began to look bad before nine, but just as the sun began to rise, the clouds appropriately began to tear as well. In the end, I got the sun aligned quite well in the power plant's chimney - not quite perfectly, but quite close. The second image shows a little...

I quickly went to shoot the moon with rationality when it was possible for a long time. This is depicted in the courtyard of an apartment building over the roofs.

There’s already time to start photographing the Moon, so I decided to test-shoot the Moon from the daytime sky when it was so good and high. Even when shooting with smart & tele-optics, you can't use filters that make shooting easier, so this was shot without any IR-pass filters. In the end, however, this seemed to become quite a passel (representing the best of my images on a shaky stock taken from the day sky), so let’s archive it here as well.

When the weather last favored the undersigned in 2016 in terms of both cloudlessness and deafness (then observation here: https://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/55736), we had to try it. I drove the worst light pollution from Espoo for less than an hour to Askola. There was a lot of moisture in the air and I was very afraid of fog, but at the scene the weather was quite good at first. In the final stages, moisture began to accumulate in the optics, and when the routines were completely lost, I was left without injecting a little heat into the backlight shield, which might have helped. W...

I was able to shoot yesterday. There was a bit of fog in the sky, but when you let the sun rise higher in the sky the situation improved a bit. There weren’t very many events in the prototypes, but the puck is probably the most active ensemble I’ve ever gotten to the cell this season. Attached is a pseudo-color image as well as a black and white version, you can see a little different things about these. Unfortunately, the animations were so big, albeit less than 50 MB, that there were now problems with Sky Guard. Therefore, it is worth watching the real-time animations of about 1 h compressed...
