Eclipse was overcast

25.10.2022 at 12.12 - 14.31 - Helsinki
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

In connection with the Nordic seismology seminar, I also observed the weather and found that filming equipment stronger than a phone camera was in the workplace for no reason. The rain weakened toward the end of the eclipse, but the sky remained concrete gray.

Aurora rays

22.10.2022 at 19.50 - 20.05 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

In Tähtikallio's October talks, we had started photographing the small bodies of the solar system, but the aurora borealis arrived to mess up the patterns. The repos coverage was quite confusing this time. A belt stood out near the horizon, rays above it, and at most the gauze reached near the zenith. Finally, Cloudiness increased starting from the west and drowned out the play.

29.9.2022 at 21.40 - Vila Praia de Âncora, Caminha, Portugali (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The sand dunes near the beach of a small northern Portuguese town had a good opportunity to photograph the central area of the Milky Way and the surrounding sky after dinner. There should have been less light pollution, although I was able to hide the worst glare behind the dune vegetation. The sky was not completely cloudless either. The next day, in the same area, it was okay to go swimming in the sea before returning the rental car and going home.

29.9.2022 at 21.32 - Vila Praia de Âncora, Caminha, Portugali (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

There was some kind of opportunity for star photography on the last night of the holiday trip. Diffuse light was enough, but there was no direct glare to the observation site next to the mouth of the river. Stars in the central region of the Milky Way and several Messier objects were caught in the picture. A little later, in the same place, I also dabbled in landscape star photography .

NGC 2146

25.9.2022 at 04.18 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (II)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The last object of the observation night was a dim rod spiral galaxy, whose spiral structure did not bring out its best features, but the distorted shape stood out.

NGC 1624

25.9.2022 at 03.14 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

There was already only one observation of this combination of emission nebula and open star cluster in Taivaanvahti. The red emission of hydrogen did its job in coloring the object.

NGC 1560

25.9.2022 at 02.48 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Of this galaxy visible from the side, it appeared that there was already only one observation in Taivaanvahti. It has quite a bit of surface brightness, but I could also take a color photo sometime later because the size is quite comfortable.

NGC 1501

25.9.2022 at 01.43 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The planetary nebula previously depicted in black and white on Tähtikalli gained color on the surface. The structures surrounding the central star were now more distinct.

NGC 7354

25.9.2022 at 01.17 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This time, the shooting target was a tiny planetary nebula, with which a dark nebula could also fit in the same field.

NGC 1961

25.9.2022 at 00.51 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The not very brilliant but clearly distinguishable spiral galaxy is in the same field with several other galaxies.

NGC 520

24.9.2022 at 23.58 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Along with the antenna galaxies NGC 4038 and 4039, there are other interesting colliding galaxies visible in the sky. These galaxies obey only one designation.

NGC 6813

24.9.2022 at 22.39 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This emission nebula is erroneously claimed in some sources to be a planetary nebula. The object's otherwise uniform shape seemed to be broken by a dark area on the side.

(523823) 2015 BG311

24.9.2022 at 22.29 - 22.35 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)

(523823) 2015 BG311 (2015 BG311) The asteroid Cupid NEO was imaged on the second night of the 2022 September talcos. The asteroid was discovered by the Haleakala observatory of the Pan-STARRS research program (F51 – Pan-STARRS 1, Haleakala) on November 29, 2014. The estimated size is approx. 740m. 24.9.2022 at 22.20 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This very small and dense almost star-like planetary nebula could not be photographed with long single exposures.

NGC 7217

24.9.2022 at 21.57 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Jani Katava, Kari Laihia, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Telescopic comet ZTF

4.9.2022 at 03.18 - 03.37 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (II)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Porin Karhunvartijat

Comet C/2020 V2 (ZTF) was imaged on the second evening of the 2022 DS days. A comet on a hyperbolic orbit was discovered by the Palomar Mountain ZTF Variable Object Discovery Program (I41 Palomar Mountain ZTF) on 2020 November 2. The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is a wide-field search program for supernovae and other rapidly changing objects based on the Samuel Oschin telescope, a 48" Schmidt telescope and a wide-field camera. The perihelion comet will arrive on 2023-05-08 2.235au from the sun. When photographing the comet, it was 4.1364au away in Ursa Major, it will be closest to 1.855au o...

NGC 7606

4.9.2022 at 02.55 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Photographing a small and faint galaxy from low usually does not lead to a very glorious result, and not this time either.

NGC 6905

4.9.2022 at 01.51 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Again, the agenda was to photograph the planetary nebula in color, from which I had previously taken only luminance . The Blue Lightning Nebula, discovered by William Herschel, was the turn this time.

Search result contains observations from time period 1.1.2000 klo 00.00 - 9.12.2022 klo 20.21.
