Jari Saukkonen and I went to Porkkalanniemi to hunt the zodiac light. I arrived at the scene myself as early as half past seven to photograph the sunset, Jari a little later. On the cliff, the wind is gentle. In half of the nine countries, zodiac light began to dimly stand out in the eye and in the pictures. Unfortunately, clouds began to accumulate in the western sky at the same time. There was still little sunlight reflected on the western horizon, but some zodiac light was visible nonetheless. Probably the phenomenon would have stood out even better after a moment of waiting for the sky to ...

I photographed this “cosmic hand” two nights this week, three hours on Wednesday, and seven hours yesterday. So a total of ten hours!

It echoes from Komakallio again. Since Friday, every night has been clear, and Komakallio has been buzzing. I filmed this subject over the weekend for two nights. Van den Bergh 158 is a long cloud of dust in the constellation of Andromeda, about 1,400 light-years from Earth. A cloud of dust appears in the sky 1.5 degrees long, which equates to three full moons in parallel!

Fog and occasional thin cloudboards bothered the shooting session, but the end result was just fine except for the swollen stars!

I photographed this dim foggy several nights during October, and on October 15th. I got to describe the last partial exposures. Unfortunately, the subject was not quite as visually pleasing as I would have liked, and I could not find very good reference images in advance. After all, it's nice to finish the project, and while learning the footage, I learned a few new tricks.

I photographed this dim fog for two nights at the Kirkkonummi Comet observation site on Komakallio. Due to the human-like protrusions separating from the fog, the object is also referred to as the "Ghost Fog." More technical information and a bigger picture can be found in AstroBin .

We were with Susanna Taivalsalmi, Lauri Kangas and Tuure Laurinoll to observe a complete solar eclipse in Gallatin, Tennessee, USA. At least Lauri will still make his own observation of the Sky Guard. The day before, Lauri and I went to look for suitable observation sites for the eclipse. Our place to stay was in the blackout zone, but by traveling closer to the center line, an eclipse lasting up to 20 seconds was achievable. The best candidates seemed to be either Springfield or Gallatin. Based on the weather forecasts for the darkening morning, we ended up leaving for Gallatin. Severe conges...

Due to the miserable weather, I only had time to see one glimpse of the eclipse through the thick cloud cover and trees. The perfect phase was already over and the moon was currently partially darkened.

I went to the shore of Kaivopuisto to look for a suitable place to shoot for the lunar eclipse. I had to look for a parking space for a while, as the beach and park seemed to be quite full of moonlit. Eventually, I stayed a little south of the Olympic Terminal for a while to wait if the moon appeared descriptively behind Suomenlinna. Unfortunately, there were some clouds in the south that seemed to rise at the same rate as the moon. After waiting long enough, I moved a little closer to Kaivopuisto so that the partial phase of the eclipse would not be left behind the trees. The crowd gathered t...

I photographed the Iwamoto comet again a couple of weeks back. The comet had clearly dimmed since the previous sighting . The stacked images still show a dim tail, but the individual images no longer contain any information about it. The main image of the observation is the median stack of images taken in a couple of hours. Because the comet moves relative to the stars and the images are aligned according to the comet, the median stack removes the stars from the image moderately efficiently. The following image is an average stack of the same still images. The third image is a single minute-lo...

I practiced remote control of Komakallio's imaging equipment, and I shot this comet for about twenty minutes. The main image is the median stack of images targeted to its comet. The second image is a stellar alignment. The third is a comet-aligned average stack.

Kari Laihia, Veikko Mäkelä and Hannu Määttänen filmed a very dim comet on the Tähtikallio Alluna telescope on the first night of the DS meeting. The comet was not yet found at the shooting stage, but the correct location was photographed based on the star map. Samuli Vuorinen's reading of the pictures then revealed that a dim haze was found. In the main image of the observation, the partial exposures are aligned according to the comet, in the second image according to the stars. Unfortunately, the flat calibration images could not be taken, so there was some unevenness and dust balls left ...

I borrowed a Coronado SolarMax 40 solar telescope from Kome in Kirkkonummi. My balcony is facing east, so the sun only shines on it in the mornings. I photographed the sun shortly before going to work, and stacked the pictures when I got home. Quite nice already activity in the sun these days.

I noticed the sun from my balcony again. This time, at the edge of the sun, a handsome protuberance was visible, from which I tried to get a closer look.

Over the early summer, I built Sol’Ex spectral heliography according to Christian Buil’s instructions . The device can capture the sun at any wavelength of visible light. Attached is an image of the chromosphere of the sun this morning in the light of the H-alpha wavelength (656 nanometers).

The observation shelter I used on Kirkkonummi's Komakallio is still under renovation, so instead of shooting through a telescope, I had to come up with something else to do. I followed a wide picture of the Milky Way with the help of a fisheye lens. There is a total of 19 x 2 minutes of light in the image.

On Friday night and Saturday, we were at the Artjärvi Tähtikallio adjusting the new Alluna telescope. Friday night happened to be a couple of hours clear, and we had time to take landscape star pictures alongside Alluna’s test drive.
