Active aurora band

18.2.2017 at 21.18 - Enontekiö, Hetta (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

I photographed the northern lights from the ice of Lake Ounasjärvi to get a picture according to the village of Heta. It was made almost impossible by some of the bright lights of the village, of which a couple of power lights in the courtyards would illuminate even the opposite shore almost a mile away. That's how much I got out of the RAW image.

Quiet aurora band

4.2.2018 at 20.49 - Enontekiö, Hetta (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The Fell-Lapland Nature Center near Skierri, on the ice of Lake Ounasjärvi, is a good place for skies. To the south, there is no wasted light, and the village road lights are mostly left behind the forest strip. Shooting to the north is more difficult, but the northern lights were nicely visible both visually and in the picture. It was -35 C from the frost, and the defrosting of the fingers afterwards was downright painful. I started coming up with a camera handling tool that could use the buttons and dials of the camera to use gloves on. A dim red LED light on the same instrument would make i...

Half-sky auroras

14.9.2018 at 23.16 - 23.40 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

As part of the thousand-star place campaign, the Enontekiö Heart Association organized an excursion to the Sotkajärvi bird tower. While waiting for darkness, I told about the starry sky, the effects of wasted light, and the adaptation of the eye to darkness. There were not many participants, because it was raining in Hetta and even in Sotkajärvi the sky only started to clear in half an eleven countries, but then it was good to watch Linnunrasta and look for constellations and other objects until the northern lights started to bother. But don't worry, the camera was used ...

Quiet aurora arc

10.10.2018 at 21.54 - 22.32 - Mynämäki (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

A good weather and moderate raven forecast predicted me to spend the night in Kurjenrahka National Park. The northern lights were quite modest, but in between there were dim rays above a brighter arc.

There are probably black northern lights in the picture.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

12.2.2019 at 01.08 - 01.23 - Enontekiö (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The weather report promised a clear night and I climbed to the top of Jyppyrävaara at midnight, but there were more clouds than a clear sky. However, I got a few pictures, even a couple of landscapes opening from the top.

Active aurora band

6.4.2019 at 00.14 - 00.43 - Enontekiö (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

6.4. it was still dark enough for the northern lights. When twilight came, the sky was strapped by an east-west belt of northern lights passing through the zenith. At times, the belt made a thoughtful bend, from which Otava managed to shine against a dark background; suddenly a momentary warp formed on both ends of the belt until the fire began to dance on the north side. Eventually, the show subsided into the spotted greenery of the sky.

Half-sky auroras

8.9.2019 at 00.45 - 01.17 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The star night I had for the local association was a great success due to the weather, the Milky Way was handsome. After the event, I was still photographed, and the arc of northern lights, which slowly drifted in the northern sky, reached to cover almost the entire sky. There is no wasted light on the top of the bare back, only one emergency light on the building on the east side of the top, so the show could be enjoyed without interruption.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

17.9.2019 at 22.52 - Enontekiö (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

As the moon rose, the sky became partially clear, and the northern lights were clearly visible despite the sky brightened by the moonlight. The joy was short-lived, for the clouds soon came again.

Half-sky auroras

7.10.2015 at 21.29 - 21.32 - Lieto (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

I also dug up old northern lights, and from this and the other two pictures I found a dune-like formation on the left side. The formation moved a few minutes further south, away from the field of view. It is no longer visible in the image taken at 21.33. I have processed the image quite heavily to make the dunes I assume more visible. My diary includes e.g. an indication of the final stage of the northern lights, after the corona at about 11.30 pm: "Finally, fast streaks and spots flashed in the sky, which I could not picture, for the changes took place even in tenths of a second. I have not j...

Half-sky auroras

6.2.2020 at 22.11 - 22.20 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The phase of the moon was 92%, but the northern lights stood out clearly. Even the street lights of Enontekiö's city center, Hetan, remained hidden, even though they were only a couple of hundred meters away.

All-sky aurora

2.3.2021 at 20.58 - 22.03 - Enontekiö, Hetta (V)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

After a long journey, fortunately I still had to go to Paljasselä to photograph the stars, because the evening was clear and the Moon did not rise until after ten. The dim northern lights interfered with star photography, as can be seen from the circular fisheye eye view, so I was already packing the cameras away when the sky started to flare. There was a hurry in it, and the beautiful and bright narrow curtain rising from the west at the beginning went unreported. The fires spread across the sky, and even the full-screen fisheye felt too narrow — in a hurry, the circular fisheye stayed in the...

Half-sky auroras

20.9.2022 at 00.33 - 00.40 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

My intention was to take a picture of the entire visible sky with the Milky Way visible across the sky to use on Tuesday 9/20. in the starry night, but the northern lights ruined my plans. On the other hand, I wasn't sorry. First, there was a bright arc across the sky through the zenith, and when I got to the shooting location and got the camera on the tripod, a handsome show began, which lasted only a couple of minutes. Then the green glow of the aurora borealis covered the sky in spots, and the clouds came quickly. Two of the series of half a dozen pictures were worth mentioning. The fis...

Rare halos

8.2.2017 at 09.50 - Muonio (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

I haven’t seemed to see a more colorful side sun or a brighter sun pillar below before. The weather was calm and the top of the ice mist clear. When I left, the temperature at the foot of the fell was -21 C; at the top it felt a dozen degrees warmer - the thermometer was not included. The phenomenon lasted more than an hour. I have not touched on colors in image processing.

Partial solar eclipse

10.6.2021 at 12.40 - 15.15 - Enontekiö
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The weather favored the eclipse, only at the very last minutes a dull cloud dimmed the sun. I wonder the orbit of the Sun in the sky in a multi-exposure image, it’s like upside down. To my recollection, Pekka Parviainen answered his picture to the wonder of the orbit of the Sun, that by looking at the hula hoop from its center against the sky, he perceives the matter. The hula hoop didn’t come with me, so I have to ask myself wiser. Images are taken every 5 minutes and the background is photographed separately. The sun should be at its highest in the ninth or tenth image, i.e. around 13:20 but...

Milky way

24.9.2017 at 21.00 - 22.00 - Turku (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

Tursa Ursa organized Bonga Milky Way evening in Ruissalo Saaronniemi on September 24. As you can see from the picture, there were a lot of people there. The weather favored the event, the Milky Way was visible to the naked eye, although the wasted light faded from the sky pretty much. Visitors received information about the starry sky and star hobby, as well as star photography guidance. Deep sky objects were also viewed with a telescope. The disadvantages of wasted light, and especially glare, did not need to be demonstrated, the bright lights of the beach, with considerable lateral leakage, ...

Milky way

17.10.2017 at 20.56 - Turku (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

#bongaalinnunrata Finally a bright evening. Ruissalo's Saaronniemi opens up a moderately wasteless sky between the south and the west, so the cape is a popular place to shoot when there is no time to go further. This time the view was somehow dim and the sky around the horizon was lighter than usual - was it due to the cloud of smoke and dust mentioned in the news the next morning? I crunched an image like this, but the contrast to the eye was considerably weaker; especially near the horizon the Milky Way was just barely visible.

Milky way

20.10.2017 at 20.14 - Turku (I)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

#bongaalinnunrata I tried to catch the Milky Way on a cell in Luolavuori, a couple of kilometers from the center of Tutu. The shooting landscape is away from the center, but the sky is very light. The Milky Way is barely visible in the original image; I have processed this image to improve the contrast. With the naked eye I could not detect the Milky Way. At the same time, I paid attention to the efficient floodlights at the nearby heating center, which are directed horizontally and also dazzle the traffic coming to the center downright dangerously. In addition, the road section itself is unli...

Milky way

21.10.2017 at 20.56 - Turku (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

#bongaalinnunrata There was already fog in the city when we left, but we got to Kolkannokka in Saaronniemi 15 minutes before the arrival of the fog, which was accompanied by the roar of the fog horns of Swedish ships. I only had time to take three pictures, and the composition was left uncorrected. However, the Milky Way was nicely visible, better than the last time the Sahara dust and Portuguese smoke faded from the sky.

Milky way

23.10.2017 at 20.28 - 21.09 - Yläne (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

#bongaalinnunrata sky near Ylänen is dark to southern Finns, and I have spent numerous companies in this place. It is 40 km as the crow flies to the center of Turku, but the horizon to the south is still quite pale. I will also include one old (taken on 9 September 2013) picture from Enontekiö, because on my autumn trip this autumn, the clouds did not allow the Milky Way to be seen. The sky in Lapland is really dark, especially in Enontekiö, as there are no large ski resorts with illuminated slopes. The photo was taken just 10 km east of Enontekiö's largest agglomeration, Heta. Although th...
