Half-sky auroras

20.9.2022 at 00.33 - 00.40 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

My intention was to take a picture of the entire visible sky with the Milky Way visible across the sky to use on Tuesday 9/20. in the starry night, but the northern lights ruined my plans. On the other hand, I wasn't sorry. First, there was a bright arc across the sky through the zenith, and when I got to the shooting location and got the camera on the tripod, a handsome show began, which lasted only a couple of minutes. Then the green glow of the aurora borealis covered the sky in spots, and the clouds came quickly. Two of the series of half a dozen pictures were worth mentioning. The fis...

Jupiter

19.9.2022 at 21.59 - Enontekiö (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

I took the picture on Tuesday 20.9. for a star-studded evening. Fittingly, the Galilean moons happened to be east of Jupiter in order of distance. On the night of the stars, we looked at Jupiter with my bird telescope, and the participants, seeing Jupiter's moons in nature for the first time, could tell that their positions had changed since the night before. There was also talk about Galileo and his importance in the history of science. We also looked at other things with the naked eye, binoculars and a telescope, but it seemed that Jupiter itself was the most memorable experience for the...

Moon

13.8.2022 at 22.37 - 23.32 - Uusikaupunki (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

For once, I happened to be in the right place at the right time, and the weather also favored shooting the moonrise.

Sun

9.6.2022 at 00.49 - 01.52 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

It was an unusually bright night, and the scenery wasn’t even funnier - so I decided to monitor to get a classic midnight sun image. The tent should have been set up in the picture area, so there would have been little life in the landscape.

Corona

15.5.2022 at 12.15 - Turku (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The ring was visible for a while, but judging by Paula Mattila's observation, it was also a little earlier that day. Clearly the perimeter is forming in the same cloud that later reached me

Milky way

12.9.2021 at 00.56 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

Calm lake and Milky Way - a good reason to start at midnight. On the north side, the peaks of the apparently blue northern lights were also visible, but the forest prevented filming.

Milky way

10.9.2021 at 00.34 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

It is always an experience to come from the south under the dark sky of Enontekiö, the Milky Way literally shines from the dark background sky. This time, even the northern lights did little to disturb the admiration of our home galaxy.

Partial solar eclipse

10.6.2021 at 12.40 - 15.15 - Enontekiö
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The weather favored the eclipse, only at the very last minutes a dull cloud dimmed the sun. I wonder the orbit of the Sun in the sky in a multi-exposure image, it’s like upside down. To my recollection, Pekka Parviainen answered his picture to the wonder of the orbit of the Sun, that by looking at the hula hoop from its center against the sky, he perceives the matter. The hula hoop didn’t come with me, so I have to ask myself wiser. Images are taken every 5 minutes and the background is photographed separately. The sun should be at its highest in the ninth or tenth image, i.e. around 13:20 but...

All-sky aurora

2.3.2021 at 20.58 - 22.03 - Enontekiö, Hetta (V)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

After a long journey, fortunately I still had to go to Paljasselä to photograph the stars, because the evening was clear and the Moon did not rise until after ten. The dim northern lights interfered with star photography, as can be seen from the circular fisheye eye view, so I was already packing the cameras away when the sky started to flare. There was a hurry in it, and the beautiful and bright narrow curtain rising from the west at the beginning went unreported. The fires spread across the sky, and even the full-screen fisheye felt too narrow — in a hurry, the circular fisheye stayed in the...

Milky way

19.9.2020 at 22.40 - Pöytyä (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

In the picture, the brightest stars have a clear perimeter. I experienced it as a disadvantage and suspected that the perimeter was due to a slight fogging of the lens, but I am sending a picture of Lasse Nurminen's picture as an extension of the awakened central house. There were no frames in the pictures I took earlier that night.

Milky way

25.8.2020 at 01.10 - Sastamala (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

As the opening image of the Milky Way, I took a fisheye photo in Sastamala. A meteor or satellite also happened to this image. I’m not sure which one, because on closer inspection, the wire seems to have been cut at both ends. The subject has thus moved during the 30-second exposure of the angular interval shown in the image - in my opinion a slow meteor

Zodiacal light

20.3.2020 at 20.50 - Naantali (I)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

Seen from a cliff northeast of Naantali, there are no very bad sources of wasted light in the west, but light pollution from the east fades the sky so much that the zodiac light is barely visible in the picture - at least it seems to me. I couldn't tell it apart. Looking at the pictures later, I noticed distant northern lights together.

Starscape image

13.2.2020 at 19.57 - 23.49 - Muonio (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The night in the desert hut provided a starry sky, but the northern lights were just greenery on the northern horizon. The pictures were captured by the shy Orion, the Milky Way balancing on the top of a spruce tree and a desert hut with almost one and a half meters of roofing snow throwing under Otava. Note. In the second picture, the camera was in summer time.

Half-sky auroras

6.2.2020 at 22.11 - 22.20 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The phase of the moon was 92%, but the northern lights stood out clearly. Even the street lights of Enontekiö's city center, Hetan, remained hidden, even though they were only a couple of hundred meters away.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

17.9.2019 at 22.52 - Enontekiö (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

As the moon rose, the sky became partially clear, and the northern lights were clearly visible despite the sky brightened by the moonlight. The joy was short-lived, for the clouds soon came again.

Half-sky auroras

8.9.2019 at 00.45 - 01.17 - Enontekiö (IV)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The star night I had for the local association was a great success due to the weather, the Milky Way was handsome. After the event, I was still photographed, and the arc of northern lights, which slowly drifted in the northern sky, reached to cover almost the entire sky. There is no wasted light on the top of the bare back, only one emergency light on the building on the east side of the top, so the show could be enjoyed without interruption.

Pollen corona

Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The sunset on the kayaking trip provided a beautiful pollen ring.

Active aurora band

6.4.2019 at 00.14 - 00.43 - Enontekiö (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

6.4. it was still dark enough for the northern lights. When twilight came, the sky was strapped by an east-west belt of northern lights passing through the zenith. At times, the belt made a thoughtful bend, from which Otava managed to shine against a dark background; suddenly a momentary warp formed on both ends of the belt until the fire began to dance on the north side. Eventually, the show subsided into the spotted greenery of the sky.

Starscape image

5.3.2019 at 21.53 - Turku, Ruissalo (III)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

I tried a new tik-tak tracking device in Saaronniemi, Ruissalo. The image is combined from two images: the starry sky is exposed for 279 s with an aperture of 2.8 ISO 200, the landscape for 45 s with an aperture of 2.8 ISO 400.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

12.2.2019 at 01.08 - 01.23 - Enontekiö (II)
Sakari Ekko, Turun Ursa

The weather report promised a clear night and I climbed to the top of Jyppyrävaara at midnight, but there were more clouds than a clear sky. However, I got a few pictures, even a couple of landscapes opening from the top.
