The morning dawned cloudy and rainy in Ulvila. I thought I wouldn't let the elf take away today's solar eclipse from me, so I took the reins into my own hands. After looking at the satellite images, I decided to drive towards Vaasa, where according to the satellite images it would be clear. I drove towards the north racing against the clock and the clouds. In the end, I found a suitable observation spot in the area of Mustasaari municipality, approx. 20 km south of Vaasa. When I got to the place and got the observation rigs together, the eclipse had already started. I was able to see t...

I was photographing the northern lights on the shore of Lake Palusjärvi in Kullaa, Ulvila. It happened once that a fireball hit directly in the middle of the camera's frame and the exposure was in progress. Jackpot!

On the night of 23/24/10/2022, I was finally able to spot a little better aurora borealis, this time finally in a dark place in the scenery of Palusjärvi in Kullaa, Ulvila. During the show, a calm arc was first visible, which slowly rose up in the sky and became an active belt at approx. 23:23-23:40. In all the hustle and bustle, I forgot to put on the anti-fog collar to warm the lens right away, and because of this, unfortunately, the lens fogged up during the most active phase. I put the anti-fog collar in place, but the lens warmed up slowly and that's why there was a frost strip in the...

Visual observation of Jupiter at night on 18/19/10/2022. The northern and southern equatorial belts were nicely distinguishable in detail, although there was no peak viewing during my observation.

The opposition of Mars is already looming about two months away. So it's a good time to start observing Mars! My first visual observation of Mars since opposition 2020. The angular diameter of Mars is still small (at the time of observation about 13.1"), but on the Ulvila observatory's Celestron (280/2800 mm) details were still moderately distinguished, even though the seeing was only average and Mars was only at an altitude of 17 degrees. By comparing my observation and my drawing with the Mars map, I was able to state that I have seen at least Syrtis Major and the plain of Hellas. Th...

I finally managed to make a visual observation of Jupiter with Ulvila's 280 mm Schmidt-Cassegrain (Celestron C11). During my observation, Jupiter is at an altitude of approx. 20 degrees. Seeing was mediocre, but you could make an observation. The great red dot was just turning out of sight. The details of the northern equatorial belt stood out nicely. The southern equatorial belt also seemed to be visible quite well, especially compared to my previous observations with the 154 mm Cassegrain. Em. with a smaller Cassegrain, the southern equatorial belt has appeared dimmer relative to the nor...

You could even say that on the night of 8/9/10/2022 the most modest aurora borealis could be seen, but everything counts. During the night, a calm aurora arc was visible low on the northern horizon, which tried to activate from time to time, but still couldn't. Sometimes the arch was visible, sometimes it disappeared, only to reappear after a while. This continued throughout the night, and at no point did the proper play start.

On the night of 8/9/10/2022, we observed a modest Northern Lights show. Low on the northern horizon, an aurora borealis could be seen from time to time, which tried to activate several times, but just didn't go away. The northern lights were like "to be or not to be", sometimes the arc was visible, and sometimes it disappeared from view. A bright, almost full moon illuminated the night landscape. Swans were squawking somewhere far away. There was also the whispering of a scoundrel from somewhere far away. In any case, the atmosphere was great, even though the northern lights remained muted...

Visual observation/drawing of Jupiter at night 6/7/10/2022. The northern equatorial belt appears to be clearly darker than its southern counterpart. In the end, seeing was OK, the details stood out quite nicely. Using a yellow filter. The strong wind caused the pipe to vibrate, which hindered detection somewhat.

Dim northern lights were also visible at night on 6/7/10/2022. During the night, a calm aurora arc/belt was visible low on the northern horizon. Two activations of the Northern Lights were observed during the night: at 23:54-00:30 and 02:34-03:30. The bonus photo of the observation is not suitable for arachnophobes! :D

On the night of 4/5/10/2022, we saw a spectacular Northern Lights show. I was able to follow the development of the play for about an hour. During this time, the calm aurora borealis activated and turned into a belt, where handsome, long rays were visible for a while. At the same time, the belt rose slightly higher in the northern horizon. Soon the belt disintegrated into ragged bits or patches of the belt, as it were, and the play began to show signs of fading.

A calm aurora arc/belt appeared in the low northern sky on the night of 4/5/10/2022. The clouds arrived after one and completely covered the northern lights from view at 01:30. The most active phase of the play was around 22:00-23:30, after which the northern lights faded away for a while. As it faded away, the aurora belt broke up as if into "rayed patches" or "blobs" (pictures 3-4). At 00:50, a new aurora borealis began to form on the northern horizon, but the clouds soon prevented it from being seen. #karhukamera
