Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The cheer of the day, a zykki visible for a while between the clouds.

Several halo forms

19.9.2022 at 13.00 - 14.00 - Juva (II)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Halos have been on the cards so much lately that we're going to put this one on the back burner. Visually, it didn't look like anything, but the stack and handling were strangely different. Figure 1. Stack of 80 images at 13:10-13:18 (3xusm). Figure 2. The bg version of the previous one. Figure 3. The last image of the stack without manipulations.

Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

In the afternoon, we could see a weak basic ring and between sauri and zykkiki. When you took pictures of them enough hundreds of times, you could find Parryak's 20 pictures there. Figure 1. Stack of 20 images at 15:58-16:00 (3xusm). Figure 2. The bg version of the previous one. Figure 3. The first image of the stack without manipulations. Figure 4. Stack of 60 images at 16:28-16:34 (2xusm). Figure 5. Stack of 90 images at 17:48-17:57 (3xusm). Figure 6. The bg version of the previous one.

Lunar corona

9.9.2022 at 00.01 - 03.00 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

A few rings of the Moon from last night. Actually, I was going to shoot the nebula with the drone, but the spectacular rings of the Moon took the win. The conditions were absolutely great. Completely calm, the temperature dropping to freezing and a lot of fog in low places. The atmospheric chatter of a barn owl could still be heard from the nearby forest on the shore of the lake. With a drone, I measured the thickness of the fog layer about 50 meters above Saimaa (picture 5).

IGS 8A

3.9.2022 at 00.29 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Gopro shot 30 sec exposures in the north direction at 00:20-03:20. The image taken at around 00:29 shows a remarkably bright satellite flash. The satellite has moved from right to left in the picture. Tero Sipinen kindly identified it as the satellite IGS 8A. There are also three previousobservations of the same satellite. Picture 1 is the original and the second is a cropped version. The third picture shows the northern lights a couple of hours later.

Rare halos

30.8.2022 at 09.30 - 13.00 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Tuesday's Pyramids. Around the sun, you could see a vague swirl throughout the morning, and that often bodes well. From the first stack of one hundred pictures, in addition to the usual shapes, a 9° ring stood out (picture 7). The show improved little by little and was at its best from ten o'clock onwards, when you could also distinguish a 24° tire from the stacks and a fifth from a 20° tire (pictures 1-3). A little later, a weak 23° upper parhelia (unless it was Parry) also stood out in the stack (picture 4). After 11:30 the cloud situation changed and the halos with it. 18° parhelia ...

Several halo forms

29.8.2022 at 15.15 - 15.45 - Juva (II)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

On Monday, the basic halos were recovered, when a horizon tire was also found in the stacks. In my own observations this year, I have considered it, as well as 46° lateral arcs, as the watchman's "reporting threshold". There were also indications of a 9° tire in today's stacks, but I will leave it unmarked. Figure 1. Stack of 60 images at 15:32-15:37 (3xusm). Figure 2. The bg version of the previous one. Figure 3. The first image of the stack without manipulations.

Lightning photo

28.8.2022 at 21.07 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Summer thunderstorms have gone around this place successfully every time, but on Sunday finally a cloud hit the spot. I fired the flashes on the GoPro with my finger on the trigger using the LiveBurst function. In it, the camera records images at 30 fps for 1.5 seconds before and after pressing the shutter button. Most of the flashes were hopelessly far away, a few were not captured in the pictures at all for some reason, but a couple hit quite close to the camera's field of view. The video has the best hit in 15 times slow motion. It shows the "afterglow" at the impact site. Based on the ...

Rare halos

28.8.2022 at 15.00 - 15.20 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Between thunderstorms in the afternoon, it was clearer for a while, and halos were also visible for a while. The ring looked suspiciously diffuse, so I immediately put a stack of 120 images to come. Pyra was then found there. The 9° and 24° tires are clear, and the inside of the basic tire shows enough reference to the 20° tire as well, that I mark it with the tags as well. If it feels very suspicious, it will be removed. Figure 1. The first image of the stack without processing at 15:06. Figure 2. Stack of 120 images at 15:06-15:18 (2xusm, bg). Figure 3. The same stack rotated every 4 degrees...

Aurora rays

28.8.2022 at 00.01 - 02.30 - Juva (III)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

In the evening, I had been setting up fly fishing for a long time, when I heard that there were many kinds of exotic wanderers on the move following the southeast currents. I also put my recently acquired GoPro (Hero 10) to shoot the southern sky when it was a clear night. While tuning them, he noticed a flash in the east, which came from a thundercloud over Laatoka. After all, it should also set the camera to shoot in that direction in the hope of overhead flashes. And while putting it on, the northern lights started to glow. So there were a few Äksons everywhere. The air was incredibly warm ...

Fogbow

26.8.2022 at 07.15 - 07.45 - Juva (III)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

In the morning, the whole landscape was covered in fog and even the Sun couldn't really shine through the fog. I used a drone to investigate the thickness of the fog layer on this hill in the village and found that it was about 90 meters. I took some pictures, of which here are a couple of examples. The first picture is slightly below the top edge of the fog, the purpose was to get a full circle from it in the pictures. Somehow it worked out, even though that arc was very sloppy. The second picture is from above, you can clearly see the unevenness of the upper edge of the fog. The pictures...

Rare halos

Pizza halo. Even before eight in the morning, the sun on the left side could be seen in the sky among the clouds. I started my laziness with the camera only when the basic ring started to stand out. I first took a few test photos with the 18-55 mm kit lens I bought online for a couple of dozen, but I immediately switched back to the basic tool Samyang's 8-millimeter after noticing the zyk in the sky as well. The situation didn't look miraculous, so I left the camera to just shoot a stack of 60 pictures. The sky clouded over shortly after that. Instead, a surprise was found in the stack...

Rare halos

19.8.2022 at 15.30 - 16.30 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Just rarities in the sky. The day was hot, the highest temperature was over 30 degrees and the wind was blowing from the southeast. In the afternoon, a faint arc just started to stand out over the Sun, so I took the camera to take a picture. At first, only the modest 23 slaika stuck to the stacks, but a little later other shapes also joined. A bit strangely, the stacks do not show any usual halo shapes, but only pyramids and even clear pyramidal sides. Based on the comparisons, the outermost ring is mostly a 23 degree ring. The best stage lasted only about 20 minutes. Marko Riikonen has once a...

Half-sky auroras

18.8.2022 at 00.01 - 03.28 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

I almost had time to go to sleep, but I still came to look at the sky from the balcony. The clouds had receded and the aurora borealis blazed directly overhead. Then I had to go and photograph them. Timelapse shot at 1:52-3:07.

Rare halos

17.8.2022 at 10.00 - 18.40 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Pyramid Halo Day. The temperature was approaching thirty, and there was no sign of rain or thunder. The main ring was faintly visible already in the morning, the pyramidal halos only got up to speed in the afternoon. This time too, there really wasn't any spectacle to be seen, but by stacking you could find many. First, a 23° upper parhelion stood out in the sky, and sometimes you could also sense the existence of 18° parhelions (picture 7). After nightfall, a suspiciously thick base ring was visible in the sky (picture 4). Pino revealed that the powerful 24° tire was partly to blame. The ...

Rare halos

15.8.2022 at 12.00 - 20.00 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The faint halos of the hot day appeared in the sky in the midday countries. I was in town on business, so the documentation was initially limited to a cell phone snap I took on the way home (picture 6). It shows 23 slaika. At home, I immediately lit the pile on the fire, even though there was almost nothing to distinguish from the cloud cover (picture 3). From the first 120 images, more pyramidal halos seemed to come off in the stack, so I took another stack of 120 and 300 images. Unfortunately, the halos were so weak that certain shapes could not be identified even with hard processing. 23ypa...

Rare halos

Kind of lucky. In Illansuu, during a routine check, I noticed a weak zyk in a fairly cloudless sky. I set the camera to shooting readiness, but I had to realize that the zykki had already gone. However, just for fun, I put a stack of 120 photos on fire. My expectations were zero, but I still checked what was being filmed. At first nothing, but then very sharp halos drawn by a passing cloud. In the end, 77 pictures ended up in the pile. Parry was hiding there. In a timelapse made from a stack of images, you can sort of distinguish halos in the sky. Figure 1. Stack of 77 images at 17:56-18:09 (3...

Rare halos

3.8.2022 at 08.30 - 15.30 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Wednesday's halos in chronological order. To start the morning, there was a basic ringula, sauri, zykki and also a stack of 46r. While photographing them, the attention was drawn to the 120° side sun, which was visible as a lonely brightening in the clouds. I reversed the shooting direction and managed to take a small stack before the brightness faded (photos 1-2). An hour later, a moderately sharp right Sauri with a piece of the horizon ring was visible in the sky (picture 5). Stacks of barbs were found around it, which could perhaps be from alternative Lowitzes (pictures 3-4, Sun altitud...

Fourth 23° parhelia within a week. Not much else has been seen... This time the streak was clear and quite well formed, no other halos were visible at the same time. I was able to capture this stack of 20 pictures from a gap in the lower clouds. The bigger pile brought nothing but disturbing clouds to the picture. The wind was still from the south today and it was warm with almost freezing temperatures. Figure 1. 20 picture stack at 16:16-16:18 (2xusm). Figure 2. The br version of the previous one. Figure 3. One raw image of the stack.

Rare halos

25.7.2022 at 12.50 - 16.50 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Extremely weak halos in the afternoon. There was a good-looking upper cloud in the sky, but halos didn't seem to appear at all. Not long ago, one afternoon, I separated something halo-like and took a stack of 20 photos without a proper concealer. A 23° parhelian halo was found in the stack during processing (pictures 1 and 2). You couldn't be sure when the lens cover was used as a cover and you couldn't know the position of the Sun. I waited for a new opportunity, but nothing appeared. In the end, there was a suitable gap between the lower clouds and you could guess the existence o...
