Active aurora band

12.8.2022 at 00.45 - 02.10 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

Nice opening of the season. The air was very humid, so the northern lights were a bit blurry, but it didn't cover their beauty.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

10.8.2022 at 01.00 - 01.50 - Lappeenranta (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I got a night cloud alarm from a friend, so I had to go to the shore of Saimaa to see what it looked like in the sky. The wide angle (15mm) was enough for the entire show. The ends are photographed in 30mm. Redness was visible at the top of the cloud area, especially in the northeast end.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

12.7.2022 at 20.00 - 21.30 - Lappeenranta (IV)
Terhi Törmälä

During the day, I followed both rain radars, forecasts and thunder radars and decided that I didn't have to go very far this time. A little before eight in the evening, I drove to the Luukkaansalmi bridge (Lappeenrantalaise knows=) and started photographing the storm rising from the southeast and the awesome-looking cumulus cloud at its front. Unfortunately, I had left the wide angle at home, so the 50mm had to do. Before the storm came over, a bit of a rainbow could be seen in its wall of rain under the avalanche. I was able to record a few flashes on the camera (I don't own a trigger...

Lightning photo

12.7.2022 at 00.40 - 01.25 - Imatra (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I chose Imatra Lake Immalanjärvi as my observation spot, but let's just say that maybe I should have driven even further. Well, first time then. I got a bit of a chill from yesterday's thunder, but it was enough for two really nice pictures of cloud lightning. It was raining steadily and the lightning was so far away that I only saw 4 cloud flashes (discharge channels), two of which I took pictures of. Other flashes were mostly flashes in the clouds.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.7.2022 at 16.00 - 17.00 - Lappeenranta (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I followed the thunderstorm situation all day and finally four of them started happening in Lappeenranta as well. I had chosen the Luukkaansalmi bridge as the anchorage point and it turned out (once again) to be the right place. The catch was one flash photo and a couple of nice avalanches. And finally the rainbow.

Anticrepuscular rays

24.6.2022 at 23.40 - 00.00 - Lohja (III)
Terhi Törmälä

During the Midsummer evening walk, the rays spreading fan-like from one point in the southern sky were noticed. The sun had set in the north a little earlier.

Pollen corona

13.6.2022 at 01.41 - Lappeenranta (II)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to test whether the pollen ring (pine probably) is also visible on 96% of the Moon. I think I will succeed. With my own eyes, it was mostly visible as fog / smudge around the Moon.

Terhi Törmälä

I went to test the new zoom and saw a nice pine pollen in the sun.

Several halo forms

Terhi Törmälä

On the move in the morning, I noticed that there were more halos around the sun.

Active aurora band

21.4.2022 at 00.50 - 02.50 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I was going to rush to the beach when I started to look by the gauges that there could be repos. The latter are taken here when, at one time at night, reddish sunlight is seen on the horizon under an arc of northern lights. For a while the northern lights were really bright and the green was seen with my own eyes. As the storm's recovery phase began, a peculiar red west appeared in front of the arc northwest, lasted a few minutes, and disappeared. 1.09 is displayed and has already been lost at 1.14. I was still watching, although there were no major events in the arc in addition to the cho...

One halo form

3.4.2022 at 15.02 - Kuopio (I)
Terhi Törmälä

I stumbled upon Puijo's lookout tower when I was once in Kuopio. And just right with the tower settled a 22 degree ring as on request. Pretty like what. Haloh April started off nicely.

Quiet aurora band

Terhi Törmälä

With the values still high, I had to go see what was visible. And you saw them. The ice mist made everything a little finer, almost art from pictures. Pretty storm again. Extra red display.

Quiet aurora band

30.3.2022 at 23.32 - 02.15 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

With Kytis again, when the values seem reasonable. The cloudiness is a bit of a nuisance again, but luckily just as the pretty storm started, the clouds understood to dodge. A nice addition was made by a single bright pillar of artificial light rising from the army area to the west. The specialty of the night this time was the greenish west / arc section above the arc of northern lights at the northwest at 1.59. Not before or after. The arc of northern lights faded shortly thereafter, sinking low into the light pollution / cloudiness.

Quiet aurora arc

26.3.2022 at 21.45 - 02.50 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

Kytis again when the values are quite comfortable. The clouds just bothered most of the time. Images taken shortly before ten are likely to show the SAR arc, even partially covered by clouds. At half past eleven, a peculiar "color phenomenon" appeared in the pictures. At the western end of the arc, clearly outside the red area, was a clear pink area. I was even wondering if Steve could be? The color did not resemble a red or purple top but quite a clear white-pink! Through the night, the clouds eased, but so did the northern lights.

Quiet aurora arc

22.3.2022 at 22.15 - 01.30 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to the switch because the repo values were reasonable and it was likely that a substorm or pair would show up and it was also clear. When I got the camera focused, a diffuse arc appeared over the arc of northern lights and it was visible from about 10:16 pm to 10:26 pm (part of the time to the eye, the rest to the camera). Meanwhile, beneath the diffuse, turquoise green arc was marked by a small, pretty substorm. As the arc faded away, the recovery phase of the storm began and beautiful red rays rose into the sky for a moment. The arc of northern lights survived in the sky for several h...

Half-sky auroras

13.3.2022 at 20.22 - 02.20 - Taipalsaari (IV)
Terhi Törmälä

I knew CME hit / hit the earth’s magnetic ring, so I set off as soon as the clouds gave up. The first pictures were taken from Pakkanenlahti, on the way to Sarviniemi (Taipalsaari). The first picture here shows how the clouds were still disturbing and the first storm didn’t really show up here properly. I "fortified" the north shore of Sarviniemi and waited for more. At the same time, the sky gradually became clearer. All the while in the sky the moon dimming activity was visible in the low north and on the lands of one side the arc rose high and for a while the dunes were faintly visible even...

Several halo forms

7.3.2022 at 21.00 - 21.35 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to see if the zodiac light was visible, but it was too cloudy for it and I might also be on the move a little too late. But pretty moon 22 was found. The second camera, in a slightly different location than the first image, recorded the side moons and perhaps a small piece of the horizon ring.

Quiet aurora band

4.3.2022 at 22.10 - 02.40 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

The guy put a message that repos were visible, so I had to go see it. Pretty sub storm right at the beginning and then a few smaller. Nice that it was clear even though there was some moisture in the air. I don't know if the SAR arc is visible in a few pictures, I'll leave it to the jury to decide. A little faintly visible. A red glow was visible above the northern lights almost all the time. In the two countries at night began a calm phase of irradiation (last picture)

Quiet aurora arc

23.2.2022 at 23.10 - 00.10 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

Because for a long time the sky decided to clear up, it took a while to see what was visible. The calm arc of northern lights will be rampant in the relatively shallow north. There was such a good visibility that the Milky Way was really visible even with the naked eye. The clouds took over the sky again shortly after midnight, but it was nice to see the stars.

Quiet aurora band

11.2.2022 at 23.45 - 01.30 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

I had to leave it because I knew there were still northern lights and the Lappeenranta region became clear in 23 countries in the evening. Nothing bigger anymore but a pretty storm was stored on the memory card. I walked a few hundred yards to the ice and the old hut got a new look. The Natti substorm started at 0.43 and shortly after one (1.05) beautiful red rays rose over the repo arc, lasting five minutes and making room for the purple threads. Before half past two, dim chorus waves were visible in the sky.
