Dim night shining clouds

13.8.2022 at 00.15 - 00.45 - Kuopio (II)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

Even the vypits showed up. We were already leaving from looking at the Perseids when we noticed that those glorious clouds are there too! They were visible for at least half an hour.

Bright night shining clouds

5.8.2022 at 01.00 - 02.40 - Kuopio (IV)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

Yes, let's pamper the hobbyist! Night temperature of 18 degrees and not a single mosquito as a nuisance. The wonderful night cloud show must have started even before I had the clock ringing a quarter past one. And until dawn it continued. The picture taken at 1:48 shows an interesting separate clear night cloud in the northwest.

Noctilucent clouds visible between clouds

23.7.2022 at 01.40 - 02.30 - Kuopio (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The thundercloud had hidden fine night clouds behind it, but fortunately it had time to move away before the darkest moments of the night. The clouds were so bright that they literally lit up the landscape. Well, the lightning flashing on the south and east side would be more effective. At half past three the clouds disappeared... it must have been too bright. The picture was taken at 1:54 am.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

22.7.2022 at 21.30 - 03.00 - Sänkimäki, Kuopio (V)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

In the evening (approx. 9:30-10:30 p.m.) a thunderbolt calmly passed from west to east from the south side of the observation tower. I saw five flashes of lightning with my naked eyes. About an hour later, an almost continuous rumble began to be heard from the far west, for sure at least more than 100 km away. On the same side at night, I got to photograph the first flash. Its distance from me was something between 50 and 100 km - you couldn't calculate based on the sound, because the thunder was heard all at once. For the next 2.5 hours I got to admire the most beautiful thunder show ever...

Hyvin heikkoja yöpilviä

20.7.2022 at 01.15 - 02.15 - Kuopio (I)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

It's hard to make them stand out in the picture, but there are night clouds over there. Photo taken to the northwest at 1.47am.

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

13.7.2022 at 14.00 - 16.00 - Kuopio, Kallansillat (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

A rare lightning cell approached from the direction of Suonenjoki. At around 15:10 I saw one straight lightning in the direction of the Puijo tower, but otherwise the experience this time was to admire the handsome cloud formations.

Half-sky auroras

10.2.2022 at 20.30 - 02.30 - Hankasalmi (IV)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The Bz value of the magnetic field plunged into such a deep minus that the expectation was to see more stunning northern lights than usual. At half past nine, the clouds gave up, and there was already that familiar green breeze, but higher than usual in the sky. Active forms came and went, rays and spirals… The opaque gauze rose to zenith, and at 9.22 pm the zenith exploded! Very bright colors - green, purple and white, and the movement was intensely fast. This it was amazing to see! The lively belts were still moving in the sky for at least a good half hour. After midnight, the arc was activa...

Active aurora band

21.1.2022 at 19.05 - 00.30 - Puolanka, Paljakka (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The northern lights were hiding behind the clouds in the early evening in seven countries. At eight, the clouds tolerated receding, and a quarter later the arc began to live and lift its calm rays. At half past nine the arc restrained itself to settle down and at times almost disappeared from view. A quarter past nine it brightened and condensed, but a decent sub-storm had not yet begun. After half an hour, two arcs appeared and again a calm radiance. By half past one, the greenery had dimmed to such an extent that I decided to take a tea break. The pause stretched for an hour, but then an int...

At the huts, the sky looked cloudy, so I watched the northern lights from the sky cameras early in the evening. Immediately after nine, a dune revolution appeared at the western end of the diffuse arc in the Tampere camera. At times, the eye could be distinguished from the wave formation directly in the northern direction of the camera view, but the waves seemed wider, which makes perfect sense considering the viewing angle. There were also dunes on the western edge of the Hankasalmi camera - I saw them until 9:30 p.m. At that point, the little birds sang that there are openings in the clouds ...

Light pillars

20.12.2021 at 21.50 - 23.00 - Kuopio (II)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The northern lights were hiding, but fortunately the frost even featured artificial light pillars on display. The vertical images are from the lights of the Savon Sellu (now apparently Powerflute?) Mills, photographed from Kallansillo. I don't know the cause of the lights from the landscape, but the view became quite a flash to the fairy!

Active aurora band

Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The first substorm was already before nine in the evening, but I didn’t have time to get to the scene yet. At 21.08 I took a picture over the Jännevirta bridge. The bridge is beautifully lit, but I think this time even finer lights were found on the horizon! At half-past ten countries I reached the scene, and I noticed that the dim arc there was always teasing a little intensifying at times (photo at 10:46 p.m.). Half past twelve then began a particularly long-lasting storm. Northern lights formed this time from west to east (photo at 11:30 p.m.). I admired and shot for about 20 minutes until ...

Active aurora band

19.10.2021 at 20.10 - 22.00 - Kuusamo, Pulkkajärvi (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

In the evening of eight countries, a dim arc appeared in the northern sky and by 20.40 it was visible bright in the zenith. The most active phase was at 21.14-21.22, the forms mostly in the northern sky and at about 21.16-21.17 also in the zenith and a little south of it.

Meteor image

9.9.2021 at 22.35 - Kuhmo, Jonkeri (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

A meteor or other falling object burned in green. To the naked eye, the light stood out only in white, but the camera also intelligently colored. I noticed a burn for less than a second.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

26.7.2021 at 00.40 - 01.10 - Pielavesi (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

Unfortunately, the visibility was only to the northwest, but luckily there were pretty night clouds in that direction!
