Clearly visible night shining clouds

9.8.2022 at 23.15 - 00.45 - Vantaa (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A quarter past eleven, Anne Wirtanen suspected that she would see illuminating night clouds in Myyrmäki. They were still quite dim, but I recognized them from the photo (photo 1): that's them! So I went myself to the actual observation site to wait and the sight was quite beautiful considering the time, the illuminating night clouds were quite bright and still quite high in the sky. Yes, these were worth admiring (pictures 2 and 3). I myself returned to the observation site after midnight. Now, like the end of the season, the night clouds were visible quite low (approx. five degrees). What...

Quiet aurora arc

8.8.2022 at 01.45 - 02.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A very faint aurora borealis. That green and barely distinguishable dim thing in the middle of the picture, the faint formation visible on the horizon is an illuminating night cloud.

Bright night shining clouds

8.8.2022 at 01.40 - 02.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

After half past two, I got a nice alarm: northern lights! I'm not in a hurry to look at the observation site. Fortunately, in addition to the dim aurora arc, there were also unexpectedly illuminating night clouds in the sky. The night cloud show was in a really, really small area and right next to the horizon, but they were bright. The shape of the night cloud was also peculiar. As for the photography, the recording went quite poorly and the end result cannot be called very beautiful. Fortunately, at least Toni Maurinen from Imatra got a nicer and more accurate picture of the night clouds....

Jupiter

6.8.2022 at 02.05 - 02.07 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Now it was time to start the Jupiter observing season for my part. The finder tube had to be fine-tuned a bit and salute Saturn before starting to study Jupiter The attached observation is directly from the form. The air directions are as they are seen through a telescope through an angle prism (north at the top, mirror image; in the future I will publish my observations in the "basic position", i.e. south at the top as the object appears in the telescope without an angle prism). The observation itself is crude, admittedly, and the time I spent on drawing observation was maybe two minutes. It&...

Dim night shining clouds

6.8.2022 at 00.10 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Very dim illuminating night clouds, almost like cloud streaks at a quick glance. However, they stood out clearly when you knew how to look. I went to check the situation a little after the turn of the day and then nothing was visible in the sky, the weather was partly cloudy. A little later I got an alert that there might be something to the north. So a quick return to the observation point on the top floor platform and yes, there was a dim night cloud there low down right next to the horizon. Pentti Arpalahti , in his own observation from the same period, has estimated the height to be five d...

Dim night shining clouds

4.8.2022 at 23.30 - 00.15 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Faint night clouds in the north direction, the height of the brightest ones is five degrees. They could barely see from behind the fir trees, I couldn't peek any higher. In the first picture, Capella and Menkalinan of the constellation Ajomie stand out, a faint belt that I could not see with the naked eye stands out a little to the lower left of Menkalinan. Brightness on the border, whether they were dim or clearly visible. At midnight, clear waves also came along (picture 2). A great, although not very spectacular or bright night cloud encounter.

Eye-catching night shining clouds

31.7.2022 at 00.30 - 01.15 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Seen from the window from home, nothing was different, but the weather seemed to be clear. However, I decided to go to the platform of the top floor to see the situation and it paid off: from there I could see a very beautiful show of belts and waves in the northwest and north direction! The night clouds were literally illuminating and strikingly bright, but in a very small area and low. That's why you couldn't see them in the yard and window. The sky is also starting to get really dark and photography is quite difficult because of that. The pictures are grainy because the tripod was n...

Eye-catching night shining clouds

28.7.2022 at 23.30 - 00.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

After 23:00 there was a clear, bright belt in the northern direction: night cloud? Time the brightest? At 23:30 it was already very easy to recognize it: among the dark, reddish clouds, a very well-illuminated and electric-blue illuminating night cloud stood out. Quite a beautiful, nice and bright night cloud show, the kind you can expect at the end of July.

Dim night shining clouds

20.7.2022 at 00.05 - 00.30 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A rather modest night cloud show. Dull belts in the north direction, maximum height approximately 10°. The photo also shows a little wave, I didn't see these with the naked eye at all. The weather is quite clear, some clouds and clouds in the sky. The star shown in the picture is Capella.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

16.7.2022 at 00.20 - 01.40 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Nothing to compare to the previous night, but still a variable, small-scale nocturnal cloud formation in the direction of the north and northeast. At the beginning of the observation, the night clouds were quite low and quite dim, I could only see them from the platform of the top floor. There, too, the visibility began to end near the north (picture 2). The main photo was taken around half past two, when these clouds were already distinct and quite bright. In the direction of the south, Saturn and Jupiter were attractively greeting each other in the summer night, and the absolutely gorgeous M...

Eye-catching night shining clouds

15.7.2022 at 00.15 - 02.15 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

I got a nocturnal alarm there after midnight; illuminating night clouds could be seen from the recess of the clouds. The weather was partly cloudy and a bit changeable, but I thought, what the hell. I went to my observation spot and the sky looked great: upper cloud, with illuminating night cloud belts still quite clearly visible above (brightness = K3, picture 1). However, the belts clearly continued to the zenith, so it was time to go off-road. The large parking lot nearby was very suitable for the purpose and over time the show became brighter (K4) and a different kind of weird-looking vort...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

12.7.2022 at 00.05 - 01.30 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Shortly after midnight, I noticed illuminating night clouds quite clearly visible from the kitchen window. I set out to take a closer look at them, but the sky was partly cloudy and it was only clear to the west and northwest. However, the night clouds were quite high and I would estimate that there was 1/8 of the sky. The shape in the northwest was belts (pictures 1 and 2). Especially in picture 1, the belt just above the tops of the fir trees was clearly brighter than the others. There were clouds high up in the northern direction, but a wave-like formation was clearly visible behind the clo...

Bright night shining clouds

8.7.2022 at 00.30 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The brightest night clouds were in the northeast, where the brightness of the belts was K=4, elsewhere the brightness was K=3 and dim gauze. I would estimate that the extent is about a quarter of the sky. In the northeast, the bright belts were somehow thick and lumpy, but I can't say whether they would meet the hallmarks of an unusual shape. The color was a clear blue glow and pearly (picture 1). Figure 2 taken with a mobile device, a wider area in the sky, from the north and northeast direction. Almost imperceptible to the naked eye, the gauze and dimmer bands continue high into the sky....

Bright night shining clouds

6.7.2022 at 00.10 - 01.10 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A little after midnight, it seemed from my window that illuminating night clouds would appear. At that early stage, it was still difficult to say with certainty the nature of the cloud, so it's better to check the matter later. Either there would be nothing to see in the sky, or there would finally be bright and spectacular night clouds. Around half past one, Anne Wirtanen was also looking out the window and said that "it seems like there are quite bright night clouds". Well, there it was! So, not when to the observation site. The terrace on the top floor had good visibility and the belts ...

Dim night shining clouds

4.7.2022 at 00.30 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Gradually, as the sky darkened, the vague possible night clouds were confirmed. They were faint, but clearly recognizable. Before one, they started to stand out somehow clearly. Capella also stands out in the original picture (1), which I managed to see with the naked eye after searching for a while. Picture 2 shows twilight rays, illuminating night clouds and an airplane that left Helsinki-Vantaa (mobile phone).

Crepuscular rays

4.7.2022 at 00.30 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

I started looking for possible illuminating night clouds, so I noticed quite clearly distinguishable twilight rays.

Crepuscular rays

26.6.2022 at 00.43 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Rays of Twilight, Ilona for the second night in a row, though not as handsome as the night before. The same image as in my night cloud observation, but treated again and differently, Veikko Mäkelän made those rays stand out better than I got by processing the image myself.

Hyvin heikkoja yöpilviä

26.6.2022 at 00.40 - 01.10 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (I)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

With the naked eye I imagined seeing something miscellaneous in the northwest, since then I no longer saw that trace. In the situation of observation, it was difficult to say at all whether or not there might be a night cloud there. In the end, I came to the conclusion that that night cloud might not be, but just because of the twilight rays, I took a photo of the area for sure. However, when examining and processing the photograph, it appears that there is a very delicate and dim belt illuminating the night cloud, which looks quite similar to the observations made by others from the same dire...

Quite a spectacular fan of twilight rays, standing out more clearly as the observation progressed. Images processed to better distinguish the phenomenon.
