Active aurora band

14.1.2022 at 22.25 - 22.50 - Järvenpää (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

I realized quite late to look at the sky camera pictures that showed the northern lights shining brightly in southern Finland. However, I managed to drive next to the Vanhankylä field and got a picture of a handsome belt that quickly changed shape. Rays also appeared. Only the green color was clearly visible to the naked eye. The strong northwest wind finally brought so many clouds into the sky that I decided to drive away.

Binocular comet Leonard

8.12.2021 at 06.20 - Järvenpää (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

We had photographed a Leonard comet with Star Rock equipment but I also wanted to get a target for my own camera cell. So I woke up early and drove to Vanhankylänniemi. I already managed to point the pedestal at the celestial pole and then I stated that I would not go on the Astrotrac. Fortunately, 300mm optics alone were not included. I put a shorter tube in the camera, exposed it without tracking, and found that I was trying to take the same picture of Arcturus with the comet. That's how it went. I drove home with my hands stiff from the cold and finally, in the warmth, it was revealed t...

NGC 4656

5.12.2021 at 05.37 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (II)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This torsionally distorted target is known as the Lätkämaila galaxy. The brighter part of the structure also stood out, but the dimmer part appeared only as a uniform diffusion. Shortly after filming this subject, I went to close the observatory door and at the same time suspected that the sky was not quite clear.

NGC 3675

5.12.2021 at 05.12 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The objects in the constellation of the big bear will start to be nicely photographable in December, just before dawn, so I decided to include this galaxy in the shooting program as well. Outside the spiral structure, a very dim mist stood out, which, based on other images taken of the subject, is quite real.

5066 Garradd

5.12.2021 at 05.11 - 05.30 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Veikko Mäkelä, Porin Karhunvartijat

5066 Garradd (1990 MA) A Mars-crossing asteroid was photographed on the second night of the December work. When photographing 50yrs. at a distance from the Big Bear Milky Way-sized spiral galaxy NGC 3675, this came into the picture. The asteroid was discovered by Robert H McNaught at the Siding Springs Observatory on June 22, 1990. The asteroid is named after Gordon John Garradd, an Australian amateur astronomer. Gordon Garradd has found a total of 16 comets and 31 asteroids. He lives outside the electricity grid and uses solar as well as wind power. Garrad has built several telescopes himself...

M97

5.12.2021 at 04.06 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The greenish nature of the owl mist also revealed a hint of red. I hadn’t previously thought the edges of the object were about uneven and the patches on the eyes were also a bit asymmetrical. The success of the shooting night continued.

M102

5.12.2021 at 03.40 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Controversy over that - I've recorded this item as M102 and not NGC 5866. Lens galaxies are often not very descriptive, and so it is with this object. The galaxy would probably have been much less described by enthusiasts if it did not have this special character.

NGC 1501

5.12.2021 at 02.40 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Kari Laihia, Veikko Mäkelä, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

In addition to a couple of interesting galaxies, Giraffe offers a lot of things for lovers of dimmer objects. This somewhat oval planetary nebula has dark structures around the eye-catching central star.

M108

5.12.2021 at 01.26 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This rod spiral galaxy, which is visible at a sharply oblique angle, had not yet been photographed by me with Tähtikallio's current camera. The subject got into its rights much better than in a grayscale image taken with an old camera .

5.12.2021 at 00.20 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Toni Veikkolainen, Kari Laihia, Veikko Mäkelä, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This rod lens galaxy turned out to be a surprisingly great target and certainly deserves to be even more color photography. The structure looked a bit asymmetrical.

Telescopic comet ATLAS

4.12.2021 at 23.51 - 00.12 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (IV)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Veikko Mäkelä, Porin Karhunvartijat

C / 2019 L3 (ATLAS) The comet was filmed on the second night of the December campaigns. The asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) discovered a comet as an asteroid on June 10, 2019 with the ATLAS-1 telescope in Haleakala, Hawaii. When the comet was found it was 8.5au from the sun. The comet in its perihelion on January 9, 2022 is 3.55au away from the sun. NGC 772

4.12.2021 at 20.47 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Kari Laihia, Veikko Mäkelä, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

This spiral galaxy does not cause great Joyful Screams. The center stood out clearly but the branches poorly. Longer single exposures come into play if I choose to shoot the subject in the future.

6164 Gerhardmuller

4.12.2021 at 20.45 - 20.58 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (II)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Veikko Mäkelä, Porin Karhunvartijat

NGC 2655

4.12.2021 at 19.01 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Toni Veikkolainen, Kari Laihia, Veikko Mäkelä, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Lens galaxies are not very common subjects for me and this picture well shows why this is the case. The subject is not particularly toned in its features.

Telescopic comet Schwassmann-Wachmann

4.12.2021 at 17.54 - 18.18 - Orimattila, Artjärvi, Tähtikallio (I)
Kari Laihia, Toni Veikkolainen, Veikko Mäkelä, Porin Karhunvartijat

29P / (Schwassmann-Wachmann 1) The periodic comet of the Jupiter family was filmed on the second night of the December 2021 campaign. Outbreaks sometimes occur in a comet, which is why we have tried to shoot several times. The comet's orbit is outside Jupiter's orbit and will be close to Jupiter 2037 less than 1au away. Discharges may increase the brightness by 1-5 mag. The size of the large comet's core is 60.4km. At the time of filming, the comet was 4.9628 at its nearest, 4.82au on November 6, 2020. Filming began during the astronomical twilight. 1Picture The sum of the stack by...
