Moon

21.11.2021 at 21.41 - 21.42 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The month from 9.41 pm to 9.42 pm.

Petavius

21.11.2021 at 21.30 - 21.50 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The moon was rising. In the little frost (-3 ° C) it was nice to spend time around the moon. The area of Mare Crisium in particular was fine, as was the crater quadrangle Langrenus, Vendelius, Petavius and Furnerius, which were slightly lower on the terminator. Of these, Petavius was particularly interested. The gap near its southern rampart separated from Petavius, I did not separate the gap at the bottom of the crater itself. The central mountain created a nice shadow that seemed to cut off the curb. Figure 1: Petavius and the adjacent Wrottesley. Figure 2: Crater quartet photographed throug...

Mare Crisium

21.11.2021 at 21.10 - 21.30 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Mare Crisium showed up nicely with the terminator. Thanks to good seeing, I was able to view this at 250x magnification. The edges of Mare also stood out very nicely from the terminator side. To the north of the crater Mare Crisium is Cleomedes. Figure 1 shows an outline of the area, Figure 2 a photograph of the area. #Lunar100: 010

Lunar corona

18.11.2021 at 22.15 - 22.50 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

It was a firm intention to admire the Moon and explore the magnificent splendor of the full moon with a telescope. Almost remained a company, Cloudy when more or less a nuisance all the time. However, the perimeter of the moon was fine. The perimeter was at its best at 22.15-22.30, after which the Cloud Cover began to thicken. The cloudboards moved fast. At times, the radius of the perimeter was only half a degree and it was almost colorless. The most handsome colors were with a bluish Va / KO radius of perhaps a couple of degrees (the image can be accurately measured). Yes, the moon was somew...

Mare Marginis

18.11.2021 at 22.15 - 22.50 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

This time I thought a little about exploring the lunar regions of the Moon. They are always fascinating. The conditions of liberalization were not the best, but something could be peeked from the other side of the moon. After a pretty clear evening, the clouds had come to bully. The moon had a beautiful colorful perimeter, but most of the time the cloud layer was so thin that the Moon was visible. Most of the time, however, the image in the telescope was not very accurate as the cloud ferries progressed at a relatively higher speed in front of the Moon. The photograph tells a lot about the obs...

Lunar corona

14.11.2021 at 21.01 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Leaving the observatory, the sky was still mostly clear. On the way home, however, clouds and fog increased. The moon was visible behind the clouds, with a large and bright circle. Colors from inside to outside: slightly bluish Va / KOP. Brightness = 4. Round and radius about two degrees. The cloud type stands out better in Figure two.

Jupiter

14.11.2021 at 17.30 - 17.35 - Helsinki, Kaivopuiston tähtitorni
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

In the event of a clear evening, the participants of the basic course in Starry Sky were offered the opportunity to get to know Ursa's observatory. There would be great display objects in the sky - namely the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. At the same time, it would be a good opportunity to see for yourself. Well. Jupiter was quite quiet. Seeing was a bit shabby, sailing between three and four. Despite little vigilance, the details were hardly separated. The NEB, or northern equatorial belt, stood out clearly dark and a little in it and there, just like the actual details. SEB, on the other han...

Jupiter

13.10.2021 at 20.30 - 20.40 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Jupiter had already been seen on a couple of occasions in the summer due to the exercise, without making any strange observations (with the exception of monitoring the movements of the moons). Jupiter is still quite low and even now the weather was good. Something hazy was found in the sky, which of course affected transparency. Seeing was pretty mediocre. However, Jupiter was a great revelation in a telescope. The moons were beautifully surrounded. However, the planet itself was not wildly separated by details. Already at 150x magnification there was quite a bit of fog, no filter of any kind ...

Lacus Mortis, Posidonius

26.9.2021 at 00.13 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The image of Lake Death (Lacus Mortis) taken through the eyepiece, Posidonius, was also perfectly visible on the terminator. The crater Bürg and also the rille at the bottom stood out clearly from Lacus Mortis. Poorly seeing did not allow for further investigation. I will try to get a drawing observation of the area as well as a more detailed picture later. Chacornac and the bay-like Le Monnier stood out to the south of Posidonius. In 1973, the Soviet unmanned ship Luna 21 landed in the crater of Le Monnier, also carrying the ATV Lunohod 2. #Lunar100: 034 #Lunar100: 020

Fracastorius

26.9.2021 at 00.10 - 00.20 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The moon was rising. The intention would be to explore the diverse area of Mare Necatris. The area of Mare Nectaris was therefore exceptionally interesting. Clearly, the terminator stood out Fracastorius, whose uneven base brightness was noticed very clearly this time, despite the poor seeing. Fracastorius is a bay-like extension to Mare Nectaris and has no central mountain and its northern edge is covered. Figure 1 drawing of Fracastorius. It is worth comparing the drawing observation made by Jari Kuula at the same time, which is more accurate. However, the same details are visible. Figure 2 ...

Julius Caesar, Albategnius

29.8.2021 at 00.51 - 01.10 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Surprisingly clear! Or well, at least almost. However, the moon was invitingly rising, so yes it was a telescope to be fetched for use. I still got it used in August. First we had to look at what belongs to Jupiter. Seeing was surprisingly good and lasted even large magnifications without ripple. This was due to a thin overhead cloud, of course, meaning the details didn’t stand out significantly while the image remained a little soft, so I didn’t actually make an observation of the subject. 150x magnification was most useful, as with the Moon. However, the observation eye is worth the school a...

Other storm phenomenon

12.8.2021 at 11.40 - 12.15 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Anne Wirtanen, Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A distant rumble began to sound and then a flash flashed. Thunder! Not yet, but a severe thunderstorm did come to the area. Or a few flashes (less than 5) were observed, but there was a strong rumble. Then a downpour that lasted violently for half an hour. And from this an observation of flooding rain. There was water up to his ankles outside.

Bright night shining clouds

4.8.2021 at 00.05 - 00.45 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Five o'clock at midnight Veikko Mäkelä set the alarm: low in the northeast night clouds. And so it was! There were clearly observable night clouds (k = 3) in the sky in a fairly small area in the fairly northeast northeast. The height from the horizon was five to seven degrees and the only place I could see them was the upstairs plateau window. The thick window and the oblique shooting through it, of course, affected the accuracy of the images I took. In the picture, the night cloud area extends a little higher in the sky than what I saw with the naked eye. However, there were belts and cl...

Eye-catching night shining clouds

1.8.2021 at 23.15 - 00.30 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A quarter of an eleven I checked out the window to see what it looked like. There was a more or less clear and perhaps illuminating night cloud. It was quite difficult to distinguish it from a possible ordinary cirrus, even though it seemed like a dim night cloud. Half an hour later, there was no more difficulty identifying: really bright night clouds, over a fairly wide area, facing northwest and north at their brightest. The best place to observe was the upstairs window that had become familiar, from which I took pictures 2 and 3 before walking into the yard. As in late summer, the Nocturnal...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

29.7.2021 at 23.20 - 23.50 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Anne Wirtanen peeked out the window and noticed that there were possibly illuminating night clouds in the sky. Well, they are! At the same time, I even got a fuss about it. The biggest problem with the observation conditions was partly cloudy air. There were large conventional clouds on the horizon in particular, and this too could easily have been acknowledged as such. But the illuminating night cloud it was, it was revealed not only by the texture but also by the color and the transformation of a pearl. Based on the photo, the case is also quite clear. We watched the sky for about half an ho...

Moon

26.7.2021 at 01.28 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The low Moon looked great. The phase of the moon was declining, so the eastern edge began to look quite comfortable. There was so much ripple that there was no joy at all in the large enlargements, but it was worth admiring this as well. Langrenus, on the edge of Mare Fecunditatis, stood out handsomely, as did a few others (Mercurius right in the shade, as well as Endymio’s elegant and stand out from the picture in some way next to Lacus Temporisk (Lake of Time)). I grabbed a picture on my cell phone from the eyepiece to commemorate my observation trip. The moon was yellow, the picture was bla...

Bright night shining clouds

26.7.2021 at 00.45 - 02.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

I got an alarm a little after midnight: dim night clouds in the northeast. I went on an observation trip a little later and the upstairs window again revealed that they were there! Without a quarter, they were already classifiable as bright. Visible very clearly, but at a fairly low level, the bright parts were about ten degrees. Figure 1 shows the situation at the time. The bright star involved is Capella and the image has been somewhat mutilated since it was taken, mainly the exposure reduced to separate the clouds. The exterior was more difficult to describe and observe, due to the low loca...

Rare clouds

25.7.2021 at 02.30 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (I)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

After the negative observation, we were already pretty sure that I would be here for the night. What else! By half past three, Anne was still peeking out the window and noticing a dim belt visible in the sky. One picture and sleep. It was a bit blurry. The night clouds came quite late and were quite dim for a short observation period. That is, here in the sky clouds appeared between two and a half to three.

Moon

25.7.2021 at 01.37 - Vantaa, Lammaslammen ranta (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

It all started when at one time at night we saw the Moon ushering inside the living room window. That's where you get the picture! The moon was quite low and in the backyard it was visible behind the trees: to take a photo I had to go a little further. The shore of the sheep pond was atmospheric. The moon was low, Jupiter stood out bright from the already quite dark sky, and Saturn also stood out near the moon's glow in one direction. The telescope was not included in the trip this time. During the same walk, one could also observe possible night clouds (separate observations from thes...

Negative observation of missing night shining clouds

25.7.2021 at 01.00 - 02.00 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

An hour of adventure in the immediate area, not just seeing any kind of night clouds. Two images from the end of the observation period. Half an hour later, a night cloud appeared, a separate observation from it.
