Arcus cloud

23.6.2021 at 14.15 - 14.20 - Espoo (IV)
Ulla Vornanen

At the desk, I noticed that the amount of light was starting to decrease. There had been an indication of thunderstorms in the forecasts and on the feeder I had seen from a weather radar image that a rain cloud was approaching from the south. With a cell phone urgently to the balcony. The avalanche in the picture was just coming on and I got the picture of it just before the gusts of wind started to intensify quickly and the trees bent over to the classes. At the same time, heavy rain also started and after a while the flashes flickered and rumbled as I was at my desk again.

Dim night shining clouds

20.6.2021 at 00.30 - 01.00 - Espoo (II)
Ulla Vornanen

As the night finally blurred, a glimpse from the balcony to the north, in hopes of observing the first, illuminating night clouds of the season. And there was no completely empty peek. A few belts were visible. A quick picture, after which I followed the development of the situation, if the night shooting trip had called. That didn’t happen, the show disappeared in half an hour from that area that was visible.

Several bright halo forms

2.2.2021 at 10.15 - 10.40 - Kuusamo (III)
Ulla Vornanen

While driving in Kuusamo, I noticed bright side suns. When the point hit a slightly more open point in the direction of the sun, the car stopped and halos to shoot. It was just over 20 degrees below zero, a decent winter's day.

The arc weekend seems to have been this. The first image with the camera from the right end of the arc fifteen minutes after I had spotted the left end of the arc from which the cell phone image. There were some shades of red and yellow at both ends. They weren't completely colorless, but they didn't even show the colors of the rainbow. Freeze just over 8 degrees at the time of shooting. Cloud arc snippets apparently?

Binocular comet NEOWISE

26.7.2020 at 01.25 - 02.04 - Espoo
Ulla Vornanen

Last weekend, the Neowise hunt drowned in a great night cloud show. This weekend, the idea for Saturday night was "Neowise or never." When the sky was almost clear after midnight, and no night clouds were noticeable, it had to start moving. It took its time to find the stars on the hind legs of the Big Bear with binoculars, and a foggy comet's head was finally found there. The camera on a tripod and zoomed in on the Big Bear's hind legs down until Neowise hit the spot. And not too early as the back slowly crept into the scattered cloud cover to cover the celestial bodies. The first ima...

Bright night shining clouds

It was supposed to go hunting for the Neonwise comet, but in the northern sky, a bright night cloud show shone, I guess you could say, through the night. I went to a couple of different places to wonder and describe the night clouds. I also tried to binocular the comet, but I didn’t notice it among the light clouds. 1st picture at 00.29 / 2. picture at 00.59 / 3. picture at 1.31 / 4. picture at 1.35 5. picture still at dawn, the fog rising to the field at 3.05.

Bright night shining clouds

10.7.2020 at 00.35 - 02.50 - Espoo (IV)
Ulla Vornanen

The clock was ringing 0.30 when I had slept past the night clouds the night before. A glance at the balcony door and the clothes on. Walking to the nearest open place to admire the bright night cloud display. It was a wonderful summer night anyway. Occasionally fog formed at low points. By two o'clock, ordinary clouds began to fall from the southwest, and they occasionally covered part of the sky. Just under three night clouds were visible in the zenith among ordinary clouds. Pictures are from 01.10 to 01.25.

Penumbral lunar eclipse

5.6.2020 at 22.30 - 23.20 - Espoo, Toppelundin ranta (II)
Ulla Vornanen

I went to the seashore at about 10:20 p.m. The lukewarm moon figure first stood out at about 10:30 p.m. on the horizon. At that time, it was not yet possible to distinguish the half-shadow eclipse from the fog. The first picture at about 22.45, when the moon had already risen a little higher. Here, too, the shadow of the lower part is still rather faintly visible. Another picture at about 10.55 pm, when the shadow at the bottom is already more visible. The third picture is about 23.05, with apparently a cloud of gauze at the bottom, and no shadow as I looked when I guessed when that dark area ...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

31.5.2020 at 00.55 - 02.00 - Espoo (III)
Ulla Vornanen

Wake up after midnight. Somesta check night clouds are. Clothes on and off to wonder. There were clearly visible clouds over a surprisingly wide range from west to north, where a certain skyline was too bright for the clouds to appear. At higher altitudes, however, they were also clearly visible to the north. Anyway, a beautiful summer night for a little outdoor activities.

Active aurora band

26.10.2019 at 22.45 - 23.55 - Espoo (III)
Ulla Vornanen

At 10:45 p.m., I noticed that the Cloud Cover is starting to shrink and a northern arc of northern lights is visible in the north of the cloud holes. Clothes on and to the nearest open terrain to check the situation. The cloud cover decreased with its decrease and when almost all the clouds were gone, the northern lights became active at about 11.22 pm. The active phase lasted about 10 minutes, after which a few more individual rays rose. Pretty soon after this, the clouds began to rise again and at 11.55 pm a little greenery was visible behind the clouds covering the northern horizon. So a pr...

Active aurora band

27.9.2019 at 23.00 - 02.30 - Inkoo, Kopparnäs (III)
Ulla Vornanen

The Saturday-Sunday night repo yacht in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area began in Kopparnäs, where only northern lights were visible at the beginning. The situation was corrected by Steve, seen in the western sky (Figure 1, at 23.06). Miraculously, the cloud cover broke up quite quickly and at midnight the most active northern lights show on this trip hit (picture 2, at 00.05). The passage of this remnant to Oitta, where again the northern lights were visible at the beginning only from the clouds. However, the cloud cover was sinking away and thus the northern lights began to slowly emerge from ...

Bright night shining clouds

24.7.2019 at 23.45 - 01.15 - Espoo (IV)
Ulla Vornanen

Had to visit the balcony to peek at the cloud situation just before midnight. It became an outdoor trip. Admittedly, only to the nearest open place. The northeastern sky had the most spectacular night cloud formation and there they rose to a reasonably high level. In all, night clouds were visible in the area extending from west to east. Two panoramic pictures included. The pictures were taken at about one o'clock at the time, after which the show, especially in the northeastern sky, began to fade.
