All-sky aurora

31.8.2020 at 23.00 - 00.00 - Muonio (V)
Mikko Grönroos

I had climbed Särkitunturi to watch and photograph the sunset and the rise of the moon. However, by the time I reached the top, the cloud ferry in the western sky had already covered the sun. I was still waiting for the moon to rise and possible northern lights. By the time the moon rose, the first northern lights began to appear against the dark blue sky. A little later, brighter rays and belts were seen in the northern sky, aptly in the direction of Pallastunturi. Strictly speaking, in the direction of Keimiö and Sammaltunturi, because there were already clouds on Pallas. At the same time, a...

Moon

31.8.2020 at 22.00 - Muonio (III)
Mikko Grönroos, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I had climbed Särkitunturi to watch and photograph the sunset and the rise of the moon and the northern lights. The sun had already set behind the clouds of the western sky, but it was cloudless in the direction of the rising moon. The amazingly reddish moon began to rise into the southeastern sky, as if climbing the Mustakero slope next to Äkäskero fell. The moon did not rise very high that night. I was left thinking about the red color of the rising moon. Similarly, redness visible in the direction of the fallen sun. Is it because you can see so far from the fell and there is a lot more ligh...

Other special clouds

28.3.2020 at 07.00 - 07.17 - Pori (V)
Mikko Grönroos, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The fells came to visit. Leaving the store in the morning, I noticed beautiful round clouds in the western sky at the top. As I drove on Route 8 towards Pori, I noticed that there were more clouds and forming a queue. Just like a snowy mountain range. Then layers began to develop on top of the clouds. In the yard of the store, about a quarter of the first observation, the structure of the clouds had already disintegrated (last picture).

Half-sky auroras

27.9.2019 at 22.15 - 23.00 - Eurajoki, Luvia (IV)
Mikko Grönroos, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A refreshing and wonderful northern lights show here in Southern Finland for a long time! I didn’t know I was filming the STEVE arc until afterwards. It was very much separated from the usual northern lights. The air direction was also different: I calculated that near the horizon the direction would be about 290 degrees, that is, almost to the west. I saw the formation of STEVE from the beginning. The first rays appeared at about 22:15 and at its widest the belt extended to zenith at about 22:30. The rays of the belt moved in a wave from the zenith towards the horizon. Shortly thereafter, the...

Vihreä reuna

21.2.2019 at 20.00 - 22.00 - Turku (III)
Mikko Grönroos, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The moon is again filming and testing a new telecom. Good luck, this time it was cloudless to the horizon. Admittedly, not quite unobstructed. The moon had time to rise stealthily as the Swedish ship ahead dodged and left a little late on schedule. Well yes, the moon just separated the green and red edges. Heh, fits the theme by the way - the ships also had a green and red "edge". Oh and a glimpse of green and red in the nautical signs! Less than 10 degrees below zero, but thankfully calm. In a couple of hours only the toes started to freeze. Would anyone else have nipples to keep their toes w...

Moon

24.10.2018 at 18.00 - 19.30 - Turku (III)
Mikko Grönroos, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Tur-Moon photographed from Ruissalo. There will be almost a month late for this observation. That was almost the only moment of the week when the clouds were cracking. And a good seam! After the observation period, the clouds again covered the sky.

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

10.7.2016 at 14.30 - 15.20 - Luvia (IV)
Mikko Grönroos

I have never seen so many anvils at once! According to my calculations, I found 7-10 anvils, if even an anvil-like formation is counted as an anvil. The nearest thunderclouds are probably about 50 kilometers east of the observation site. It seems that here on the coast the only way to admire thunderclouds is from a distance. Well good like that. I didn’t see the lightning and didn’t hear the rumble, but the adjacent meadow still had “shooting drills,” so it wasn’t quiet. :)

Half-sky auroras

31.12.2015 at 23.20 - 01.10 - Luvia (IV)
Mikko Grönroos

The last and first northern lights of the year. The cloud curtain opened just before the turn of the year. During the observation period, the repos were quite dim, but visible to the eye despite light pollution. There was a bang and a sparkle, but there was such a strong feeling that it was not due to the winter thunderstorm. In addition, rocket launchers were visible, but they are not thought to be counted either. ;)

Mikko Grönroos

I was practicing shooting the rising moon, but the 200-millimeter tele was a bit short. After all, Orion had a shorter focal length. Finally, fresh frosts (about -7C) were obtained here in the south as well, so I decided to walk to the observation site. :) Too bad that smoky mist is suppressing me at worst. : /

All-sky aurora

15.9.2015 at 23.30 - 01.00 - Muonio (V)
Mikko Grönroos

The only cloudless night of the fall / repo trip provided a wonderful northern lights play. I admired the brightest repos I had ever seen with the naked eye first - literally, I watched them on the sauna benches! :) Sauna surface then! After getting out to take a picture after the sauna, the brightest episode was over and there were no dimmer fires in the sky. That’s why my pictures are “a little” colored. Eventually clouds began to accumulate in the sky again, but good anyway.

Aurora rays

16.8.2015 at 00.15 - 02.15 - Luvia (II)
Mikko Grönroos

The repo season opened from the yard, so the yard surfaces! The best step seems to be early in the night, but something will stick to the cell nonetheless. Otherwise, the nights in Finland when t-shirts and shorts are included in the repo shooting range are probably few. :)

Several halo forms

11.4.2015 at 14.14 - 14.20 - Luvia (II)
Mikko Grönroos

In three pairs of images, the first is gimmicked in the Lightroom and the second directly from the camera. There was a bit of confusion about the conditions, so I’m a little hesitant about those halo shapes. In addition, a bright dot is reflected in the first pair of images as a lens reflection. Also, a ring at 46 degrees is probably from the lens when it is so sharp-edged. In the command figure, the triangular pattern below the top of 22r is, I think, due to the shadow of the abutment.

All-sky aurora

17.3.2015 at 19.45 - 23.45 - Kaarina, Kuusiston linnanrauniot (V)
Mikko Grönroos

What a wonderful show in the south! I have been looking for a suitable dark repository near Turku on the map for a long time and the ruins of Kuusisto Castle have now been tested in practice. And it was a relatively dark place, albeit with little light pollution in the north direction and light leaking from the greenhouses (shown in the pictures as a yellow spot). The ruins provide a nice setting for the pictures. In fact, the ruins were a surprisingly popular place that night - as the sound of nature of the week one could hear the chirping of a flock of shutters. ;) Moreover, that evening, an...

Active aurora band

13.3.2015 at 22.15 - 00.00 - Luvia (III)
Mikko Grönroos

A couple of three hours of standing at the edge of the field passed quickly when the weather was calm and the sky was happening. During that time, the temperature dropped to frost and eventually the fogging of the lens filter (shown in the pictures) interrupted the foaming of the repos.

Active aurora band

2.1.2015 at 21.00 - 23.30 - Luvia (III)
Mikko Grönroos

I started observing around 8:50 p.m., and then I didn’t even see green on the camera. Soon after nine, however, two dim arc-like skies began to form in the sky, barely visible to the naked eye (Figures 1 and 2). The arches remained almost unchanged and I compiled one of the panoramic subjects as well (Figure 3). I was going to end my shooting session at least three times (if they would brighten up anyway). And just as I was quitting for the fourth time, the repos brightened. Luckily, the intentions to quit only got to the point of thought and I didn’t have to dig the camera again for Holli. Th...

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

27.12.2014 at 00.46 - Luvia (II)
Mikko Grönroos

I sent this observation to Vahti once before, but I will try again now. Have I left incomplete data for the previous one or have I lost to the bit space? Well, anyway, I do the same trick as for too dry wooden footstools when I don’t get any backlash: I’ll tell it again. :) The northern lights peak of the night seemed to be over, but the northern sky glowed throughout the observation. PS. Do moderators have a common e-mail address to which they could inquire about the above-mentioned situations, for example - when they don't know if my observation was valid or even received?

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

11.12.2014 at 08.30 - 08.35 - Turku (III)
Mikko Grönroos

This havis comes a bit in the aftermath when I didn’t have time before. While driving the car in the morning, I thought the first flash was a product of my imagination. But the second time I flashed I had to believe that lightning it is! I didn’t hear the rumble in the car, but I was able to grab a cell phone picture from an anvil that flashed through a crack in the cloud. In place, Lauste and lightning flashed to the east. So I didn’t see if the clouds or ground lightning were just flashes. They were pretty close when the whole tienoo became enlightened. As if by chance the same evening at ab...

All-sky aurora

12.9.2014 at 23.45 - Muonio, Olos (V)
Mikko Grönroos

Brown colored the earth, rainbows without, and northern lights the sky. Awesome decision for Lapinreiss! I was surprised at how the camera cell sees so many more colors in the human eye. Images are adjusted in LR. The adjustments are still a bit fetched when I first got grabbed repos with wit. Probably already on the side of exaggeration (contrasts almost on the pin). I still tried hard to restrain myself and keep the shadows and saturation moderate. :) A fireball was also recorded in the fifth image.

One halo form

14.3.2014 at 22.45 - 22.10 - Luvia (I)
Mikko Grönroos

My first observation is the Star of Heaven. The air was calm, a couple of degrees Plus. The halo phenomenon and the moon shining behind the gauze created an exciting atmosphere. The former of the image pairs are highly processed (Figures 1, 3, 5) and the latter are untreated (Figures 2, 4, 6).

Mikko Grönroos

Here’s a colorful piece of archive four years ago that remained a mystery to me. I'm not sure, but could it be a perimeter? Judging from other pictures taken at the same time, the temperature was then clearly on the frost side.
