Arcus cloud

23.6.2021 at 14.10 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A ragged avalanche clouded ashore at Espoo's Westend around 1410. Immediately after taking the picture, a strong wind began in front of the front, and after a while heavy rains and fairly dense lightning arrived, which then progressed inland.

Mars

24.10.2020 at 01.22 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

It still didn't hit very good and even weather on its own in the Mars descriptions. However, so many moderate random squares were found in the clips of a couple of thousand squares that they could stack the general features of the planet's surface. Of course, this approach works, too, but focusing is quite challenging in weak weather - especially with a rigid and slippery manual system. The image is a stack of 314 frames imaged through a 742 nm IR transmission filter.

Mars

28.9.2020 at 04.20 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Mars directly from the home balcony across the sea, photographed through a thin flat mist / cloud of gauze. Seeing was not fussy, but with a slightly larger stack of images, however, the main features of the surface of Mars came to the fore. Imaging was performed under prevailing conditions with a popular 742 nm IR emission filter. Stacking images (1089 pcs) and wavelet filtering with RegiStax6 and some histogram adjustment with Adobe Lightroom. It’s been 15 years since the last shot, and the original tracking and focusing devices on the TAL-200K telescope would require, to put it mildly, a bi...

At least 5 lightning strikes seen

13.7.2020 at 23.25 - 23.45 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

When I returned home from work at about 11 pm, a heavy rain area passed over Espoo, where it also rarely flashed. There was still a camera and tripods in the car after the night cloud shooting trip, and I stopped at Karhusaari to shoot the northeast-facing rain center, where that second picture was taken at 23:25. At the same time, another center approached from the west, which then, as Tapiola knows, hit the ground at least three times. The first picture is from the second attack at 11:45 p.m. After that, it started to rain really hard at the scene and the flashes were already close enough th...

Bright night shining clouds

10.7.2020 at 00.30 - 02.00 - Espoo (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A great and wide-ranging night cloud play, which was a pleasure to watch above the port of Haukilahti in Espoo! There were plenty of different shapes on display and it would have been nice to get their shots shot with a slightly wider focal length lens, even a movie clip - maybe next time! The horizontal image was taken at 01:18 and the vertical image at 00:47 heading northwest. Both images are lightly processed with Adobe Lightroom software to increase contrast.

Total lunar eclipse

28.7.2018 at 00.27 - Espoo (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The transition phase of a complete lunar eclipse, where the main shadow is already moving past the left edge of the moon. This was, in my opinion, almost the finest stage of the whole eclipse, when looking with my eyes a handsome "diamond ring" effect was created, the image of which created the image quite flat.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

8.7.2018 at 00.28 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Moderately clear night clouds, which I watched between about 00:15 and 01:10 in the port of Haukilahti in Espoo. In the attached image taken at 00:28, the histogram is (calmly) adjusted so that the fine structure of the clouds is slightly more noticeable than visually.

Starscape image

31.10.2017 at 21.18 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Starry evening on a late autumn beach. The constellations of Ajomiehi and Taurus shine with the lights of Helsinki and Espoo in the eastern sky. The bright moonlight creates shadows on the beach landscape, which is colored from the opposite direction by the warmer tones of the houses and the narrow light wedges of the street lamp. The foreground brightness of the image has been increased in post-processing.

Quiet aurora arc

12.10.2017 at 00.53 - Espoo (II)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The first northern lights of the season, for my part, were photographed in Solvalla, Espoo. The shooting started at around 11:17 pm, when the slightly more active period seemed to be coming to an end, and at 00:53, at the beginning of a more active session, the camera battery was running low. The balance 330 shots with 15-second exposures, a video of which is attached. For the first time, a battery-operated lens heater was also included, without which shooting would have stopped after just a few pictures, as the air cooled to +2 C and the relative humidity was exactly 100%. However, the fogs r...

Starscape image

2.9.2016 at 23.25 - Porkkalanniemi (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Milky way atmosphere in Porkkalanniemi. The image is a panorama of four horizontal shots extending from the horizon through the zenith to the Cassiopeia area. There were so many challenges in seaming the white balances between the images and the vignetting effects created by the 17mm lens that I decided to monochromatize the sky with popularity, just to create a more cohesive impressionistic mood. The foreground was painted slightly with a flashlight during the exposure to bring out the rock landscape.

Bright night shining clouds

7.8.2016 at 22.45 - 00.10 - Espoo (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Bright night clouds and gauze from Suurpello, Espoo, photographed over Ring Road II. Pictured is about a third of the entire play at 11:22 p.m. The brightness compared nicely to the street lighting in the area.

Bright night shining clouds

1.8.2016 at 01.00 - 02.45 - Espoo (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Fine night clouds lingered for a couple of hours north of the sun reddening the horizon. Photo taken in Nuuksio on the top of Solvalla's Swinghill ski slope. During the night, more than a hundred photos were taken with the aim of making a time series film - but even if a finger accidentally swept the focus sadly wrong at the beginning of the series ... The initial exposure experiment produced a sharp image, and the clouds were beautiful to watch live!

Clearly visible night shining clouds

14.7.2016 at 02.07 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Beautiful night clouds lingered in the northern sky for another hour. The brightness seemed to vary somewhat, though perhaps quite a contrast to the clouds flying from time to time. The photo was taken in the Suurpello area of Espoo over Ring Road II.

Transit of mercury

9.5.2016 at 14.15 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Emil Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The beginning of the passage of Mercury. The planet has already moved completely in front of the Sun. The weather is moderate, a little fog at times and some thermal vibration when shooting from the balcony.

Sun

11.4.2016 at 15.06 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Sunbeam array AR2529 photographed directly in the primary focus of the TAL-200K telescope and magnified 3x-Barlow. A circle corresponding to the size of the earth has been scaled to a 3x image.

Sun

22.3.2016 at 14.01 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A group of sunspots photographed through 2524 afternoon thermal ripple. Main image directly from the primary focus of the TAL-200K telescope (1/2000 s, ISO 800), partial image through the x3 barlow lens (1/160 s, ISO800). Both images are single exposures. Image histograms and temperature balances adjusted with Lightroom.

Iridium 53

17.1.2016 at 18.00 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Iridium 53 flashed with a brightness of about -6.8 magnitude above the Suomenoja power plant. It looked great, even though the sky was shrouded in some kind of icing mist, a little more modestly in the photo, of course. White balance and histograms adjusted with Lightroom.

Starscape image

28.12.2015 at 23.55 - Espoo (III)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Orion in the winter clouds. Sirius also flashes on the low right. Histograms and white balance adjusted with Lightroom.

Moonn kehä

28.12.2015 at 23.38 - Espoo (IV)
Janne Sievinen, Ursa (Helsinki)

A bright lunar perimeter created by clouds that quickly passed in front of the moon. The play lasted only a couple of minutes, the perimeter slightly alive, probably due to variations in the droplet size of the cloud.
