Other storm phenomenon

Juha Ojanperä, Porin Karhunvartijat

On the night of August 17/18, 2022, the live flashes and kaleidoscopes were also recorded in Karhukamera's photos.

Binocular comet PanSTARRS

18.8.2022 at 23.00 - 23.50 - Fregenal de la Sierra, Espanja (I)
Tapio Lahtinen, Tampereen Ursa

This comet had a handsome double tail (albeit with a fast tube under the African sky...). Well, I tried too, but it didn't work under the Spanish sky. Maybe too many stars and the half moon had an effect. I tried to make the view even better by removing the stars. Unfortunately, it's heading to a more southerly sky, so it could be that it was the last shooting opportunity.

Other storm phenomenon

18.8.2022 at 23.20 - 00.10 - Ulvila (IV)
Juha Ojanperä, Porin Karhunvartijat

Distant night thunder occurred around Pori on the night of 18/19/8/2022. During the night there was mainly a cloud fire, some live lightning was visible. Mainly the lightning struck inside the cloud and mostly the catches were flashes inside the cloud, but I was able to record two actual lightning strikes. The flicker was active during my observation, the flicker was visible in the sector extending from the west through the north to the east. It was difficult to photograph when it was flashing in every direction, and you didn't know which direction to photograph. There were some distant, m...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

19.8.2022 at 00.40 - 02.15 - Kurikka (V)
Marko Myllyniemi, Lakeuden Ursa

After all, we got that "concentration" here too, because a little before one in the morning, a thunderstorm started approaching from the direction of Kauhajoki, which really was as if a battery of a thousand tubes had opened a drum fire. Nothing really came of sleeping, but the rain that preceded the thunder on the other hand made sure that you couldn't even shoot without the camera getting wet, and there are trees in front of the back terrace. Then I thought that I would wait for the thunder to pass by and go to the terrace in the front yard to film a proper light show, but the thunder di...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

19.8.2022 at 01.42 - Porvoo, Sondby (III)
Jorma Koski, Ursa (Helsinki)

The aurora borealis is not visible in the northern sky, but a bright ball of fire raged in the gap in the clouds.

Aurora rays

18.8.2022 at 23.54 - Porvoo, Sondby (II)
Jorma Koski, Ursa (Helsinki)

The northern lights were briefly visible in the northeast. The half moon and the haze brought by the heat messed up the pictures.

A fireball at night, as bright as a crescent moon

19.8.2022 at 01.42 - Jyväskylä (III)
Harri Kiiskinen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The bright fireball was captured by Nyrölä's meteor camera.

A small ball of fire under the North Star. Only a small initial part was left out of the picture.

Aurora rays

19.8.2022 at 00.00 - 00.20 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (III)
Jorma Mäntylä

The aurora show continued, although not as bright as the night before. So I went again to the side of the forest road, from where there is a view to the north. Handsome rays stood out just after midnight, after which a peaceful green arc stood out in the north. The show may have continued, but after 0020 clouds covered most of the sky.

Half-sky auroras

17.8.2022 at 23.00 - 02.00 - Akaa (IV)
Markku Ruonala

KP and Bz let us wait for the harder Aurora Borealis set, but even this one was fine. At best, more than half the sky was covered by aurora borealis, not bright and not very active, but this show also offered Corona and pulsating flashes.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

18.8.2022 at 17.25 - 18.45 - Lempäälä (IV)
Esa Palmi, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The most active ground lightning I've seen this summer. The rumbling was constant and lightning often struck the rainless area. Fortunately, there were sometimes Edesjonki-like filming locations.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

17.8.2022 at 20.10 - 20.20 - Kuopio (III)
Pasi Tuomainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Lightning and aurora borealis The purpose was to chase thunder, but then it turned into photographing the northern lights with the thunder front receding into the horizon. Such an opportunity has never come across before. The moon also rises in the middle, quite a nice arrangement. The flashes were unfortunately small when shooting with a 14 mm lens.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

18.8.2022 at 17.00 - Tampere (I)
Tapio Lahtinen, Tampereen Ursa

Surprisingly, a very lively cell hit Tampere when I was returning home from the movies. I had to be sheltered from the rain for quite a long time under Näsinstilto. It's a shame that the rolling shutter of the cell phone camera can't really capture lightning. I combined 2 consecutive frames of the LightningCamera application into the main image.

Several halo forms

18.8.2022 at 11.20 - 11.22 - Raisio (II)
Mikko Peussa, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

After a long time to recover some halos. You could have found more with a suitable stack, but this is enough during working hours.

Markku Ruonala

This thunder came as a surprise. Quickly gather the filming equipment and go a short distance from the house to the edge of the field to photograph and admire. It's fair to say that I was actively lightning, the bills got messed up after 25 songs. Also nice slow motion and what's best, the photographer stayed dry from the rain. The picture is taken from the video.

Several halo forms

18.8.2022 at 16.30 - 16.45 - Helsinki, Malmi (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

While walking along the Malmi market road, attention was drawn to the sky: wow, halos! It had been a while since I last saw the halo effect. The 22° ring was clear, at the beginning of the observation it was about three quarters of a full circle, then the length shortened to about ninety degrees. There is also a bright side sun POK-Va-S on the left side and even with the naked eye, the blue part was spread out. The pictures (especially picture 2) also show a piece of a very short horizon ring. The upper part of the 22° tire was a little spread, so at least there was a good effort on the upper ...

Half-sky auroras

18.8.2022 at 00.01 - 03.28 - Juva (IV)
Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

I almost had time to go to sleep, but I still came to look at the sky from the balcony. The clouds had receded and the aurora borealis blazed directly overhead. Then I had to go and photograph them. Timelapse shot at 1:52-3:07.

Perseids

18.7.2022 at 02.44 - 03.22 - Jyväskylä (I)
Harri Kiiskinen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Perseids are rarely seen anymore and the weather is also starting to affect the observations. Attached are the statistics calculated from the images of the Watec camera (pcs/h) and, for comparison, the total number of Perseids identified by the Watec camera and the GMN (Global Meteor Network) camera from the August observations. The direction and field of view of the cameras are different.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

17.8.2022 at 15.49 - 16.20 - Tampere (IV)
Markku Lintinen, Tampereen Ursa

As the thunder front approached, I thought that the series of maximum stacks that worked for the Perseid photo might work for the lightning photo. I adjusted the north camera to a faster 20 fps for the duration of the shoot. There was still one finishing touch left to try for the next shooting: the gain of the sensitive sensor should have been adjusted to the minimum, so that the exposure time would have been even a little longer. Now, many flashes were probably not captured, even though the video turned out to be a total of more than 100,000 images to be stacked and these flashes to be picked...
